David Sheaffer Theater Arts Endowment

Established by Bertha Kennedy, Sarah and Steve Sheaffer, and other members of the Sheaffer family in memory of “Brother” David Sheaffer 2001

This library subject endowment is established in loving memory of artist David Sheaffer, a far-sighted and knowledgeable historian of the theater scene in the Santa Cruz community. With enthusiasm, exquisite taste, and meticulous professionalism, David Sheaffer assembled an outstanding local theater archive that has enriched UCSC Library Special Collections and provided a significant resource for scholars and theater-lovers.

This endowment was established collectively by David Sheaffer’s large and loving family. A superbly generous contribution was received from Bertha Sheaffer Kennedy. The idea of the endowment was conceived by Sarah Sheaffer, who also contributed generously and encouraged her siblings to follow her example. Stephen Sheaffer was very close to David and also made a generous lead gift. Jack Sheaffer pre-deceased his brother, but would have been pleased to participate in this tribute.

The David Sheaffer Theater Arts Endowment is intended to extend and perpetuate Mr. Sheaffer’s legacy by providing continuing enrichment for Theater Arts collections at the UCSC Library. Endowment income shall be used to maintain and continue the David Sheaffer local theater archive in Special Collections and also to support book, journal, and non-print media collections in Theater Arts. Endowment income is intended to enhance the depth, character, and distinction of the UCSC Theater Arts collection and provide a specialized resource to support faculty research, student learning, and the educational needs of the general public.
