Remote Library Services

Ask Us via chat, email, or online consultation with a librarian.
Use the yellow Search box on our homepage or any of the Library’s subscription databases to find ebooks and online articles, newspapers, music, primary sources, and more.

You can also search or browse all library-licensed streaming videos.
For books, check UC Library Search. Don’t see what you need? Submit a purchase request or, if you are on campus, request the book through Interlibrary Loan.

For specific journal articles or book chapters, request PDFs through our Interlibrary Loan service.

For films assigned as part of a course or in support of graduate/faculty research, submit a purchase request and the Library will work with you to determine options for getting you what you need.

For aerial photos, while the Library migrates our collection of digitized aerial photos to a new platform, UCSC-affliatied students, staff, and faculty can request these materials by contacting diginit@ucsc.edu.
Your CruzID Gold login will provide access to the online collections available through the Library website.

For the most seamless access, download, install, and log into the Campus VPN as well. This will ensure you are authenticated as a UCSC user even when accessing Library-owned materials you discover through Google or other search engines.

Learn more about using Nomad and Unpaywall browser extensions to facilitate full-text access.
Start with our research guides for resource recommendations according to subject or major.

Attend one of our online workshops held throughout the quarter covering tools and topics to help you with your research including: archival research, managing citations with Zotero, digital mapping (GIS), text analysis, podcasts, research data management, and video production.
Course Materials: Licensed online Library resources are available for use in your classes including ebooks, journals, and streaming media and films. Contact research@library.ucsc.edu if you don’t see what you need for your class or if you have questions about the resources you find.

  • Course Reserves: Use Course Reserves for your assigned online readings to make them easily discoverable by students. Library staff can provide you with a link to add to your course in Canvas.

  • eBooks: If you plan on using a Library-licensed ebook (other than one from JSTOR) as required reading, let the Library know by emailing research@library.ucsc.edu and we will confirm if a multi-user license can be obtained (publishers and authors sometimes limit access to a small number of users or cut off access after a certain number of uses). If the Library cannot obtain such a license, we will work with you to identify an alternate resource.

  • Films: Use the main Library Search to see if we have streaming access to the film you want to use in your class or browse all library-licensed streaming videos. If we do not have it online, ask us to order it for your class.

  • Open Education Resources: The Library can help instructors to lower student textbooks costs through the use of Open Educational Resources. Contact research@library.ucsc.edu to learn more or discuss options.

Teaching Support: Librarians and archivists are available to consult with faculty developing research assignments on how to best incorporate information literacy skills, digital primary and secondary sources, archives and rare books, digital scholarship methods and technologies, and scholarly communication practices into their courses and research assignments. Reach out to discuss how the Library can support the research assignments in your courses or to request teaching support.
The Library is committed to acquiring the materials it can to support your research.
