The Library’s Center for Digital Scholarship is excited to announce a new digital exhibit now on display on our VizWall in the Digital Scholarship Commons:
Labscapes: Dioramas of Research provides a behind-the-scenes look at the work of UCSC's Institute of Marine Sciences and the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience. Created by Artist in Residence Saul Villegas (a recent graduate of UCSC's MFA in Digital Arts and New Media), the exhibit's aim is to bridge the gap between science and art by providing a tour through visual case studies in labs, coastal field sites, and other research environments around Santa Cruz County. The exhibit will be on display in the DSC throughout Winter Quarter 2026.
The center will also host Saul for an artist talk on January 29th from 1–2:30pm in the DSC. Saul will discuss his artist in residence work. The program will include a live Adobe Photoshop demo focused on digital workflows, image refinement, and practical strategies for capturing subjects in the field and lab—including observation, lighting, composition, and documentation techniques. The session will conclude with a Q&A and informal discussion.
