The Rowland Collection was described in 1977 by the late UCSC University Librarian Emeritus, Donald Thomas Clark, as a collection of "great historical and genealogical importance."
The most important aspect of the material for a researcher is the set of approximately 10,000 index cards pertaining to the history of Santa Cruz and its people, from pre-Statehood to the middle of the 20th century.
