Though the main UC Santa Cruz campus has been evacuated, the library's online resources and services remain available.  We want to express our deep appreciation to Cal Fire and the myriad of agencies working to fight the fire and keep the campus safe.

Nomad and Unpaywall Logos

Don’t let a paywalled journal article stop you from pursuing the full-text. There are two free browser extensions that can help.


Nomad is a Chrome extension that will link either to our Library’s subscription, or to an interlibrary loan request link. Download LibKey Nomad at the Chrome Store, and when prompted for your institution, search Santa Cruz and choose University of California Santa Cruz. 

On a journal page, you will start seeing the Nomad access button in the lower left corner.

At select sites, such as Wikipedia or PubMed, you will start seeing small Nomad access buttons next to citations with library subscriptions.



Available on both Chrome and Firefox, Unpaywall detects when you’re looking at a journal article and adds a small color-coded tab to the right side of the page.

   A green unlocked tab links to a legal, free, open access version. The tab can also be gold or bronze.


   A grey locked tab means that Unpaywall can’t connect you to an open access copy.


Both Nomad and Unpaywall browser extensions have clear privacy and security statements that they won’t share your data with third parties.

A note for UCSC students, staff and faculty using the campus VPN to access library licensed databases, journals, books and other resources

From Campus ITS:

Beginning Saturday July 25th, at 10 am, signing into Campus VPN will work differently.

You will be prompted to enter your password as usual but will also be required to enter a passcode or keyword tied to the Campus Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) solution. This is the same method for logging into UCPath, MyUCSC, Canvas, and CruzPay.
Please review the quick start guide to learn what to enter into the MFA field. Valid options include push (recommended), SMS, phone, or passcode.

Hathitrust Logo

HathiTrust has taken an important step to open up copyrighted material in their digital library to member institutions with copies of those items in their physical collections. As their libraries are approved for the service, UC faculty, students, and staff will have access to digitized books in HathiTrust that represent UC’s physical holdings. This emergency, temporary service expands access significantly beyond the millions of digitized public domain volumes currently available via HathiTrust.

To take advantage of this temporary expanded access:

  1. Visit and click the yellow “LOG IN” button.
  2. Select “University of California Santa Cruz” and log in using your CruzID Gold credentials.
  3. Search the HathiTrust digital library to locate the item you wish to view.
  4. Click on the Temporary Access link at the bottom of the record to Check Out the item through the Emergency Temporary Access Service.

You will have 60 minutes of access to an in-copyright book during the session. If you remain active in the book during the session, access time will be extended. You are not able to download the book in any way; you may only read it online in an active session while using HathiTrust. This access model is intended to address the unique access needs of this moment while still protecting the author’s rights.

It is important to note that this is a temporary service. Emergency access will end when regular access to UC library’s physical collection is restored. 


HathiTrust’s Top Three Tips for Users:

  1. Log-in, Log-in, Log-in! Temporary Access books available from your library’s collection are available only when you log-in to HathiTrust using your normal CruzID Gold log-in and password. 
  2. Check out an item only when you plan to use it. Each Temporary Access book has an initial check-out period of 60 minutes. If you remain active in the book during any session, access time will be extended. If you do not remain active, it will be released for use by other users on your campus.

Quickly and easily find online library materials!

What changed?
Searching from the library homepage search box now defaults to our new "Available Online" scope. This will retrieve online library resources such as ebooks, articles, streaming audio or video, and more.

This change supports remote learning and instruction by increasing the efficiency of discovering online materials.

Want to see physical library materials in your search results?
Select the "Everything" option from the dropdown menu on the library homepage to retrieve results for both physical and online items.

Library Closure

Both the McHenry Library and the Science and Engineering Library will be closed until further notice. Services that involve accessing or exchanging physical items will not be offered. In keeping with the campus announcement to extend remote instruction and its related activities through the end of spring quarter, and in support of the health and well-being of the campus community and the library staff, the University Library expects that library buildings will remain closed through spring quarter.  There will be no access to the physical collection while the building is closed. The University Library is committed to supporting the success of remote instruction and is making as much of its collection and services accessible online as it can.

Remote Access to Course Content

  • Much of the Library’s collection is accessible in eBook format now. Request additional titles needed for your teaching using our recommend a purchase form. If an eBook can be licensed for academic use, the library will license it. For ebooks already in our collection, can confirm if the title has a multi-user license suitable for your course needs.
  • The University Library has expanded its support for licensing streaming media required for teaching through June. Faculty may request films required for teaching your courses using our purchase form. If a required film can be licensed for academic use, the library will license it. 
  • The University Library has and will continue to take advantage of publisher offers to expand access to content not currently licensed by the University Library through June - see Library Trials to see what is available now.
  • The University Library’s Interlibrary Loan service will continue to fill requests that can be readily completed and delivered electronically such as book chapters, tables of contents and articles. See the Interlibrary Loan page for more information and details on how to submit a request.

UC Santa Cruz's Regional History Project is proud to announce the publication of Seeds of Something Different: An Oral History of the University of California, Santa Cruz, a masterful two-volume history weaving together first-person accounts of the campus's evolution, from the origins of an audacious dream through the sea changes of five decades. More than two hundred narrators and a trove of archival images from Special Collections & Archives contribute to this dynamic, nuanced account.

Digital Scholarship Research Symposium

At UC Santa Cruz, students are engaged in creative, critical research using digital tools and platforms.  The Digital Scholarship Research Symposium provides students an opportunity to present their digital projects in a professional setting and to allow them a venue to show their project in its functioning form, allowing them to engage in a scholarly setting with their colleagues, faculty, and other academic professionals and receive meaningful feedback about their projects.  This iteration of the Digital Scholarship Symposium would continue to provide an opportunity to share finished projects through a platform on the DSC website and focus on lightning talks with a Q&A session and a digital showcase of their projects.

Join us to explore public-facing, media-rich, critically engaged, and creative student research. 


Schedule will include:

Opening remarks by Elizabeth Cowell, Richard L. Press University Librarian Presidential Chair
3–7 minute lightning talks by UCSC students
Special lecture and round table events hosted by the DSC.

Apply to Present

Are you a student at UCSC?  Have you created a digital project?  Join us as a presenter! 

We invite all undergraduate and graduate students engaged in creative, critical research using digital tools and platforms to submit proposals for a digital lightning round presentation.  Presentations will be 3–7 minutes depending on the number of participants.

The Digital Lightning Rounds will be supplemented with an online exhibit that allows students to highlight the interactivity of their work by sharing live digital projects.  We encourage you to submit live projects or project prototypes when possible. Classroom work is welcome: you can submit a proposal for individual or group work as long as all authors are represented on the project.

Each presentation will include:

  • A 3–7 minute lightning talk (depending on the number of students)
  • An opportunity for your lightning talk to be recorded and hosted on the DSC website (by presenter's permission only)
  • A spot on our digital showcase that includes a project abstract, your name, an image, and a link to your project (if applicable)

This newest exhibit featuring unique materials from the Grateful Dead Archive will explore how the members of the band and the global Dead Head community took inspiration from one another in creating an image-rich, worldwide art practice that, like the band’s music, scrambled perceived standards and norms. 

The creative works presented in When We Paint Our Masterpiece reveal a world full of variety when it comes to design practices, international traditions, visual icons, and art forms. There has been space for all of these patterns and visions in the community of fans and fellow artists that blossomed around the band, and that community of creators continues to thrive today. This exhibit explores  the mutual appreciation among fans as well as between fans and the band. 

On view starting February 6th through 2020.

This free exhibit is open to the public during McHenry Library hours.

UC and Elsevier 
After formal negotiations stalled in February 2019, UC and Elsevier have remained in informal conversations and are looking forward to continuing that dialogue. UC and Elsevier plan to hold a meeting to explore reopening negotiations within the first quarter of 2020. 

Over the past year, Elsevier has signed other transformative agreements, and we are hopeful that this suggests that the publisher is ready to discuss deals that align with UC’s goals.

In the meantime, learn more about how the Library can help you find the Elsevier articles you need.

Share your views: Members of UC’s academic community are encouraged to participate in a short 3-minute poll to gauge the impact of the loss of immediate access to current Elsevier content via ScienceDirect.

Wiley and Springer Nature
UC is in negotiations with Wiley and Springer Nature to renew contracts that expired on Dec. 31. In each case, UC and the publisher have a shared desire to reach a transformative agreement that combines UC’s subscription with open access publishing of UC research. Both publishers have extended UC’s access to their journals, under the terms of their previous contracts, while negotiations are underway. 

New agreements: Association for Computing Machinery and Journal of Medical Internet Research

UC has announced two new publisher agreements, each with a different model to provide financial support for UC researchers who choose to publish their work open access. 

  • UC was one of four major research institutions to enter into an open access publishing agreement with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Under the three-year agreement with this society publisher, the UC libraries will pay to retain access to ACM’s journals and other publications, and to ensure that UC researchers’ articles will be made openly available at the time of publication at no cost to the authors.
  • As part of a new two-year pilot with JMIR Publications — a native open access publisher of more than 30 digital health-related journals including its flagship Journal of Medical Internet Research — the UC Libraries will pay the first $1,000 of the open access publishing fee for all UC authors who choose to publish in a JMIR journal. Authors who do not have research funds available can request financial assistance from the libraries for the remainder of the costs, ensuring that lack of research funds does not present a barrier for UC authors who wish to publish in JMIR journals. 

Each agreement expands UC’s portfolio of options for its authors who wish to make their research open access. As UC’s first such agreements with a native open access and a society publisher, respectively, the two new pilots exemplify the university’s commitment to finding ways to work with publishers of all types and sizes to advance open access to UC research. 

Cambridge University Press: Agreement now fully implemented
After an initial kickoff phase in 2019, UC’s first transformative open access agreement, with Cambridge University Press, is now fully in effect. Starting this month, when UC corresponding authors submit their accepted manuscript for publication with Cambridge, they will be prompted to consider making their article open access. The open access fee will be discounted by 30%, and the UC Libraries’ $1,000 subsidy will be applied automatically. Authors who have research funding available will be asked to use those funds to pay any remaining amount, under a cost-sharing model designed to enable the UC Libraries to stretch their available funds and help as many authors as possible. As with UC’s agreement with JMIR, if an author does not have research funds available to pay the remainder of the open access publishing fee, they can request that the libraries pay their portion, as well. The Human Book is a Library speaker series for every UCSC student. We know that life after college can seem intimidating. As a response, we are bringing one alum to campus every quarter for our Human Book event. The event will give current students a chance to listen to someone who used to face similar challenges when they were a student at UC Santa Cruz years ago. The alum will talk about how they surmounted these obstacles and ultimately built a successful career. There will also be ample time to ask questions. Bring your questions and join the conversation!

You can learn how to use the printers to print your own project for free or request that we print something to add to our checkout pool. The DSI pilot program will open with access to three Ultimaker 3 3D printers for all UCSC affiliates. The DSI is associated with the Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC) on the ground floor of McHenry. The programs are geared towards helping you get your digital scholarship up off the ground by providing access to equipment, software, and programs that support your ability to experiment and innovate.

The collection of Hayden V. White Papers is newly processed and openly available for research in the Special Collections & Archives reading room. The collection includes White’s research files, correspondence, drafts of writings and publications, teaching files, and conference files, in both paper and digital form.  The collection guide can be viewed on the Online Archive of California.


Hayden V. White (1928-2018) was a literary critic, historical theorist, and University Professor at UC Santa Cruz who made contributions to the study of narrative theory, historiography, and hermeneutics throughout his academic career. A central thread of White's research throughout his career was questioning how historical events are constructed through writing and discourse. White was instrumental in forming and formalizing the department of History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz, and also taught at Stanford, Wesleyan, the University of Rochester, UCLA, and UC Berkeley.


The new exhibit showcasing this collection, entitled “Archival Research as Penance”: The Papers and Library of Hayden V. White, opens on Friday November 1st from 10:30am to 12pm in the Special Collections & Archives Reading Room, and will be on display until March 20th, 2020. The exhibit was curated by CART Fellows and History of Consciousness graduate students Patrick King and Christian Alvarado.

Dryad is an open-source, research data curation and publication platform. UC Santa Cruz is a proud partner of Dryad and offers Dryad as a free service for all UC Santa Cruz researchers to publish and archive their data.

Datasets published in Dryad receive a citation and can be versioned at any time. Dryad is integrated with hundreds of journals and is an easy way to both publish data and comply with funder and publisher mandates.

Making Data Publishing as Easy as Possible:

  • In addition to supporting datasets as part of a journal submission, Dryad now also supports datasets being submitted independently

Santa Cruz and the Loma Prieta Earthquake, 30 Years On

The 6.9 magnitude earthquake that rocked the greater Bay Area in 1989 is known to many simply as the San Francisco earthquake. 

But its epicenter was near the Loma Prieta Peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains -- much closer to Santa Cruz

Something new is happening on the Lower Level of Science and Engineering. Rumblings of rumors suggest that 3D printers might be coming to the library... and they are right! The Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio opened this Fall.

Following the success of the work in the Digital Scholarship Commons, the DSI will be a space in Science and Engineering that expands the work of the library to support the 3D lifecycle. The DSC and the DSI are integrated programs geared towards helping you get your digital scholarship up off the ground by providing access to equipment, software, and programs that support your ability to experiment and innovate. The DSI pilot program will open with access to three Ultimaker 3 3D printers for all UCSC affiliates. That's a lot of threes!

Re:      Elsevier access suspended


The University of California has been out of contract with Elsevier since January, but until now the publisher continued to allow access to 2019 articles via ScienceDirect. As of today (July 10, 2019) UC’s direct access to new Elsevier articles has been discontinued.


What is affected: Members of the UC community no longer have direct access to:

  • 2019 articles in all Elsevier journals
  • Older articles in certain journals (download the list)

What is not affected: Articles published before 2019 in most Elsevier journals (covering about 95% of historical usage) should continue to be available via ScienceDirect.  

The systemwide faculty Senate has encouraged stakeholders across UC to use alternative access methods or contact their campus library for assistance in obtaining articles, and to refrain from any new independent subscriptions to Elsevier journals at this time. “By ‘holding the line,’” the Senate leadership writes, “the UC can help change the system of scholarly communication for the betterment of all.” 

How to get the articles you need

Information about other ways to access Elsevier articles is available on the library’s website and summarized below. There are several options — plus, the library is always here to help.

  • Use the interlibrary loan (ILL) request form. Any request for content no longer licensed through Elsevier will automatically be placed into a rush queue. ILL requests made in Melvyl or via UC-eLinks will also be expedited.  
  • Use tools like Google ScholarUnpaywall and Open Access Button to quickly find open access copies, when available.
  • Email the corresponding author listed in the abstract to request a copy.
  • We are here to help. Contact our Interlibrary Loan staff at so we can best facilitate your needs.

What happens next?

We will be carefully evaluating the impact of losing access to new articles on ScienceDirect over the coming months, and will do our best to ensure that you have access to the articles you need. Meanwhile, UC is hoping to reenter formal negotiations with Elsevier if the publisher indicates that they are willing to discuss a contract that integrates our goals of containing costs and facilitating open access to UC research.

The Science & Engineering Library tour highlights the Library Services Desk, the Information Commons for online research and study, the Active Learning Classroom, group study rooms, the HSI STEM Hub, the Video Game Room, and the new Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio.
On both tours,you will also learn about library cards, borrowing course textbooks, and borrowing Chromebooks and Dell laptops. Tours run approximately 15–20 minutes, and meet just inside each library’s entrance. Join us!

Open Access 2020

In June, the University of California Santa Cruz joined its sister UC campuses in taking an important step towards the goal of making all scholarly journal literature freely available to the world by endorsing the international open access (OA) initiative, OA2020. Led by the Max Planck Digital Library, OA2020 is a global alliance committed to new models of scholarly publishing that ensure outputs are open and re-usable and that the costs behind their dissemination are transparent and economically sustainable.

The UC Systemwide Library Catalog received an upgrade and a new URL on June 17.

This update called "Melvyl Discovery" includes many improvements to the user interface.  The new site is available now live at

Two things to note for current Melvyl users:

  • If you have an account in the current Melvyl system, it won't transfer to the new Melvyl Discovery System but you can set up a new one using the Sign In button on the new site.
  • If you have lists of research sources saved in the current Melvyl system, they won't transfer to the new system automatically, but the library has posted instructions for importing lists on our website.  Be sure to transfer your lists by the end of life date for the old Melvyl, August 9, 2019.
Melvyl Discovery Personal Lists

Set up an Account

To save items into a personal list on the new Melvyl Discovery site, first create an account in the new system. Click the Sign In button at the top, right of the new Melvyl Discovery home page. On the subsequent screen, click the Create Account link and fill in the information requested. Once successfully logged into your Melvyl Discovery account, the Sign In button at the top of the screen changes to the given name provided. 

Note: Your Melvyl account works only in the specific campus instance in which it was created. 


Creating & Saving to a Personal List

  1.  Search for the items you want to include in a list.
  2.  Click the Save button to add the citation to the list.
  3.  When finished, click My Items in the upper right corner to display the list.
  4.  Click on the Create List button.
  5.  Provide a List Name (required) and List Description (optional).
  6.  Select a Privacy preference.
    a. Shared: A permalink is generated for others to view, cite and share the list. Changes to the list are updated in real time after the page is refreshed.
    b. Private: The default value, no permalink is created and the list is only visible to its creator.
  7.  Click Save.

Although is it not possible for Personal Lists attached to old Mevyl (aka WorldCat Local) accounts to be automatically ported into the new interface, users can easily import lists to their WorldCat Discovery accounts using the instructions below.


Importing Lists to the new Melvyl WorldCat Discovery

  1. Log in to your existing account in Melvyl.
  2. Click your login name in the upper right corner to view your profile and links to your personal lists.
  3. Click a list name to view its details.
  4. Click the Export to CSV link.
  5. Save the file where you can find it later.
  6. Go to the new Melvyl (aka WorldCat Discovery) and log on to your account.
  7. Click your account name to display a drop-down menu and select Import My Lists.
  8. Provide a List Name (required) and List Description (optional).
  9. Click the Choose File button to locate the file to be imported.
  10. Once the filename is displayed, click Import list to begin the import process.
  11. You will receive a message that the list was successfully imported.
  12. The list will be added to My Personal Lists.  To view your lists, select My Personal Lists from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner.

UC Santa Cruz is about to begin renovation of the third floor of the Science & Engineering Library.

In March 2018, the University Library received a $5 million gift from an anonymous donor to renovate the top floor of the Science & Engineering Library. The floor will be named in honor of Professor Emerita of Astronomy and Astrophysics Sandra Faber, one of the campus’s most distinguished scholars.

This generous gift will allow the campus to create safe, attractive, comfortable, and convenient study environments designed to support academic success. The renovated space will be quieter, better ventilated, and much better equipped with AC/USB power in seating areas. The renovation will create seating for more library patrons, and provide separate zones for focused, quiet study, and for small group collaboration. Work will begin in the summer with a reopening planned at the start of winter quarter. Here is a brief project timeline:

  • Fall 2018: The campus approved the renovation project and timeline.
  • Fall 2018: The campus and library worked with master architect EHDD to develop the project’s Request for Proposals (RFP).
  • Winter 2019: The campus solicited RFPs from qualified design/build teams. Two teams of creative, talented, and enthusiastic builders and architects submitted proposals.
  • Spring 2019: The design/build team of Roebbelen and Ratcliff was awarded the contract for the project.
  • Spring/Summer 2019: Design and construction documents will be reviewed and approved by Capital Planning and Space Management.
  • Summer/Fall 2019: The third floor of S&E Library will be closed for renovation.
  • January 2, 2020: A new, vibrant third floor will open!

This generous gift also gives us the opportunity to update the furniture on the third floor — much of it is more than 25 years old — with selections that better support the needs of modern students and researchers. We are working with a variety of vendors to find the best options and value. We have already installed some sample pieces on the third floor of S&E and more will be added. We encourage you to visit, see for yourself, and leave us your feedback. If you prefer, you can leave us feedback online.

In the spirit of transparency, the University Library will issue three more news flashes to keep students, faculty, and staff fully apprised of our progress. The next two will update you on the work in progress. The fourth and final announcement will celebrate the completion of the work and re-opening of the third floor. These features will be published in the quarterly Library Newsletter and included in campuswide newsletter, Tuesday Newsday. This occasion also provides an opportunity to transfer campus historical records to University Archives. Such records may include UCSC administrative records or other materials documenting UCSC history, campus life and culture. Specific guidelines about the types of material suitable for University Archives can be found here

The Koret Scholars Undergraduate Research Slam celebrates the accomplishments of this year's Koret fellows. The program provides funding and workshops for undergrads with unique research projects and their faculty or graduate student mentors. Education and the Avant Garde How Fluxus Artists Shaped the Arts at UC Santa Cruz

Two new exhibits are now on display at McHenry Library:

Education and the Avant Garde: How Fluxus Artists Shaped the Arts at UC Santa Cruz 

This exhibit looks at some highly experimental creative campus undertakings in the late 1960s and the library collections that reflect them. It includes an "instant class kit" created as part of a campus report on art education, publications by the College Five Graphic Arts Guild, photographs of a campus Shakespeare production that included a geodesic dome by Buckminster Fuller and costumes designed by comic book artist Jack Kirby, and more.

New Twists on Old Tales: 1000 Years of Handmade Books

This exhibit was curated by undergraduates in HAVC 135: The Art of the Book (taught by the Library's former head of Special Collections, Beth Remak-Honnef). The students present facsimiles of iconic medieval manuscripts alongside modern artists' reflections on similar subjects and book forms.

While we did make progress, particularly in the past few weeks, toward defining a model for open access publishing of UC research, Elsevier was ultimately unwilling to meet UC’s key goal: securing universal open access to UC research, as stated in UC’s faculty-driven principles on scholarly communication, while integrating open access publishing fees and subscription fees into a single cost-controlled contract.

The Academic Senate today also expressed its support for UC’s position with regard to the Elsevier negotiations.

In the end, cost, in particular, proved to be an insurmountable challenge. For example, Elsevier’s most recent proposal did not include any cap on the total amount UC faculty could end up paying in article publishing fees. Their model also would not have allowed us to fully subsidize article fees for authors who lack the funds themselves. To meet UC’s goal of open access publication for all UC authors, Elsevier would have charged authors over $10 million per year in addition to the libraries’ current multi-million dollar subscription. The university is not willing to accept a deal that increases Elsevier’s profits at the expense of our faculty. As a result, the University of California will not be signing a new contract with Elsevier at this time.

While we do not know exactly when, Elsevier is expected to begin limiting UC’s access to new articles through its online platform, ScienceDirect, possibly very soon. This will mean some changes to how UC scholars access certain Elsevier journal articles.


What content will — and won’t — be affected

If you use Elsevier articles in your research, here are the most important things to know:

  • Most Elsevier articles published in 2018 or earlier will still be accessible via ScienceDirect. Because UC’s prior contracts included permanent access to previously published content, you will still be able to get immediate access to the full text of most articles via Elsevier’s ScienceDirect backfiles, just as you have in the past.
  • Open access articles in Elsevier journals are also unaffected. Many authors choose to pay an open access fee (called an article processing charge, or APC) when they publish, so it’s always worth checking to see if the article you’re seeking is available open access from the journal’s website or elsewhere online (see tips on how to search for open access versions).
  • Elsevier e-books and other products licensed by UC (e.g., Reaxys) are covered under separate contracts and remain available as before.
  • What is affected: At some point, Elsevier may begin to turn off UC’s direct access to articles with a 2019 publish date and the backfiles of certain journals (download list). However, open access versions of many of these articles are available. You can also submit a request and the UCSC Interlibrary Loan Staff will help you get a copy of the final, published version of an article.

"Depth-of-Field: Translating the Benefits of Virtual Reality from the Laboratory to the (Higher-Ed) Classroom" with Matt Cook

Please join us for this event in the David Kirk Digital Scholarship Commons (ground floor) from 4–6pm in McHenry Library.

Increasingly accessible Virtual Reality technologies allow course content to be presented in context, at human scale, and responsive to the wide range of body-centered interactions. These representational characteristics, which define our engagement with real-world objects and environments, have been shown in the literature to improve performance on activities that overlap significantly with target learning outcomes across multiple disciplines. Yet, relatively few curricular interventions have made full use of VR (or have published on the results of such integrations). This talk will use case studies and associated implementation strategies to explore and narrow this gap in the research literature, thereby empowering participants to begin thinking about their own VR-based course integrations.

Join recent U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera and Santa Cruz book artist Felicia Rice in an exploration of the powerful role that poetry and art can play in conversations about the pressing issues of immigration, belonging, and home. This presentation draws on new archival and historical sources to survey the major developments in Japanese board games in the postwar Shōwa era (1945–89), including the import of American games, the unlikely emergence of Japan’s wargame culture, and the structural foundations of the ancient Japanese game of sugoroku.

Working Group Charged with Investigating Systemwide Integrated Library System

The Council of University Librarians has charged a working group to investigate how the UC Libraries might license a single, shared, systemwide Integrated Library System (ILS). An ILS is the system which allows our library to manage the acquisition of material, items borrowed by patrons, bills paid, as well as a variety of other library management related tasks. 


The UC-wide group is currently working on the request for proposal (RFP) phase of this project.
