  • UC Open Access Policy image
    November 1, 2015

    October 15, 2015

In support of the UC Academic Senate Open Access Policy and in response to the UC faculty request for an automated method for depositing policy-eligible publications, the University Library and the California Digital Library are pleased to announce the launch of the University of California Publication Management System.

The UC Open Access Policy passed by the UC Academic Senate in July 2013 has been in effect for Senate faculty at UCLA, UCSF, and UCI for more than one year now and expanded to the other seven campuses as of last fall.

Until now, the deposit process has been manual. However, as of October 12, 2015, a UC publications management system began closely monitoring selected publication data sources to identify new journal articles by UCSC faculty authors. When it locates new articles authored or co-authored by UCSC faculty, the system sends the faculty member an email notification containing a link, by which they can access the system to confirm authorship and submit manuscripts to eScholarship.

The following information will help UCSC faculty when they receive an email notification:

    • Use the CruzID Gold login and password to log in via the link provided by the publications management system.
    • Article manuscripts are not deposited in eScholarship automatically. After logging in to the publications management system via the email link, faculty can confirm authorship of their articles; the system then interfaces with eScholarship to enable uploading of manuscripts.
    • Faculty can delegate management of their publications to someone else. Link directly to the form here or refer to the library’s Open Access Guide for help with this process.
    • If the software confused the faculty member with another person with a similar name or the faculty member is no longer at UCSC, reply to the message with that information. It will be sent to the system’s administrators, who will correct their records.

UCSC librarians and staff are available to answer questions and provide assistance with the UC faculty open access policy as well as with larger issues of how to broadly disseminate and preserve research published by UCSC faculty. If you have questions, please email us at:

More information about Open Access and the UC policy is available at the UC Office of Scholarly Communication website.

An Uncommon Place: A Digital Companion follows the structure of the original Uncommon Place exhibit in the Porter College Sesnon Gallery and the Cowell College Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery.

Created in celebration of UCSC's 50th anniversary, the exhibit traces decisive moments in the formation of UC Santa Cruz, from the 1950s until the late 1970s, marking the early history of UCSC through images and multi-media material.

An Uncommon Place: A Digital Companion features many of the same photographs from the University Library's Special Collections and Archives, but also includes new online extras, such as archival footage of the Cowell Ranch Before UCSC, a 1998 Campus promotional video, and an interactive map exploring Early Campus Milestones.

  • Marie Severin Comic Book Artist
    February 20, 2015

    Marie Severin: Comic Book Artist

    Open 23 February – 15 May 2015

    Special Collections and Archives

    McHenry Library UCSC (3rd floor)

Special Collections and Archives is delighted to exhibit over 40 comic books selected from the recent and very generous donations of UCSC alumni James Gunderson and Peter Coha that form the Gunderson-Coha Marvel Comics Collection. Other items on exhibit have been drawn from existing library holdings.

Marie Severin is a comic book artist best known for her work as a colorist at EC in the 1950s and as an artist at Marvel in the 1960s through the 1990s. Her first major penciling assignment was the Doctor Strange series in Marvel’s Strange Tales, followed by stories featuring the Hulk, Sub-Mariner and Kull. She is the first woman to have been inducted into the Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame.

According to Gunderson, “Marie Severin was a real pioneer in the mid-20th Century comic book industry, and many of the comics presented in the exhibit were part of the dramatic rebirth of superhero characters in American comics in the 1960s, and in film and television today. She is also one of the most beloved creators of caricature and satire in the comic books of the 1960s and 1970s.”

This exhibit has been conceived, supported and virtually curated by Jim Gunderson. Not only did he donate most of the materials, but he also commissioned the comic book catalogue, donated the exhibit cases and provided all the information about Marie Severin’s work.

His tireless efforts, as well as those of Special Collections and Digital Initiatives staff and Special Collections students are much appreciated. A special thank you goes to Ashlynn Prasad for selecting and installing the comics on display.
