What's going on at McHenry Library? Gophers. They've gotten way out of hand recently. We're still unclear how they got hold of the heavy machinery... OK, so it's not gophers.

McHenry Library has begin the first of two phases of construction -- first a building addition and then seismic upgrade and renovation of the existing structure -- that are scheduled to be completed in 2009. While the construction has required some collection and staff moves, services and hours of operations remain as before. For background info about the project and the latest news, see the two links to the right...

Before the renovation the library had a drop box for book returns. While the old location is closed, how about installing a new drop box, either closer to the performing arts center or the administrative building? I know the obvious objections --- that's pretty far to schlepp a giant cart full of books, but it would make it easier to return books. This is a issue for us as well. Access to McHenry Library changed drastically with this phase of the Addition/Renovation project. (The book drop is supposed to be restored when the next phase of the project begins next year.) We're having to adapt to a whole series of access issues for our users during this project of which the loss of the drop box seems to be one of the top concerns.

I spoke with the folks here who have been actively seeking an alternate location but it appears that the main impediment is finding a place where they will let us put a book drop. How far we have to schlep the books is really not the deciding issue. Whenever we identify a possible location, there seems to be some objection -- e.g., obstructing traffic -- that prevents us from using the site.

We've passed your note onto the concerned parties in case these sites hadn't already been explored.

The new stairway art in McHenry is great, but you need a sign identifying and giving credit to the creators of it. Agreed on all points. We're very happy with the art installation created by by Prof. Dee Hibbert-Jones's Public Art class. Information recognizing the students, the TA, and the professor responsible for the stairway project, completed at the end of the Fall 2006 Quarter, is displayed nearby. Is there anything that can be done about noise in the Library? Despite our reputation to the contrary, libraries aren't all that quiet. There is always some activity going on whenever we're open and that means there is some degree of noise. The main levels of both floors, where circulation and reference desks, as well as other services and activities are located, are generally busiest and noisiest and therefore to be avoided. Anywhere near a service desk, computers, areas set up for group study or staff offices will be more likely to be noisy.

However, we do try to make sure that there are places suitable for quiet study. In McHenry Library the fourth floor and in the Science & Engineering Library the upper level are designated for quiet study. You may find quiet spots on other floors but, since quiet isn't required, there are no guarantees.
