Visual Resource Collection

Electronic Image Reserves
(Image ERes)

Introduction

The Visual Resource Collection offers Image ERes, the electronic version of the Collection's reserves service, accessible through the Internet. Students can review visual material from class lectures and identify and study pictorial reproductions for assignments or examinations remotely, from college labs or home computers. Image ERes is especially appropriate for courses with large enrollments, where facilities do not exist for group or individual slide reviews.

After instructors select the 35 mm slides for their courses, the Image ERes Coordinator will scan the selected slides and create thumbnail and large versions of each image. Links to the digital images are posted on individual course pages on the University Library's Electronic Reserves (ERes) server. Textual documentation accompanies the images. ERes digital images are displayed at 72 dpi. Although they are not of sufficient resolution or quality to be projected in large lecture halls, instructors and TAs have used a data projector to project these images for section discussions and reviews.

Images are available for UCSC educational purposes only. ERes access is password protected, and users are required to accept the copyright agreement before viewing a course page. Course pages and images are available on ERes only for the duration of the quarter in which the course is taught.

Procedure

Setting Up an ERes Course Page

Instructors may request an ERes course page by filling out and submitting an "ERes Course Page Request Form" and a "Copyright Compliance Acceptance Form", both of which are available from the Visual Resource Collection, from the University Library Reserves Desk, or on-line at the Reserves web site. Instructors specify passwords for the course pages; it is the responsibility of the instructor to make the password known to students registered in the class. Library staff can not release passwords.

Image ERes pages can be linked to course web pages (such as those created through ITS Instructional Computing); however, the Visual Resource Collection staff cannot be responsible for external web pages.

Selection of Items and Scanning Schedule

Instructors must pull all slides to be scanned and indicate the order in which they are to be arranged for viewing. They may select up to 200 images per course, or 20 slides per week for the 10-week quarter. Five working days' notice is required to post a selection of 20 slides. With fifteen working days' notice, all 200 slides may be posted before the beginning of a quarter.

Documentation

Textual documentation accompanies the images shown on Image ERes. Information for each image usually includes:

The Image ERes Coordinator will usually post documentation as it appears on the labels of the scanned slides. Instructors may provide additional or alternate information (on paper, via e-mail, or on a Mac-compatible disc) at the time the slides are submitted for scanning.

Accessibility

The Image ERes Coordinator will create HTML-formatted pages containing the digital images with their documentation, and post a link to these pages on the instructor's ERes course page. Students may view Image ERes from any computer that has Internet access. The University Library's ERes site can be accessed from the Library's home page under "Electronic Reserves" or directly at ERes (http://eres.ucsc.edu/). Students will be prompted to enter the course password and accept the copyright agreement.

Visual Resource Collection staff are available to train instructors and students on using ERes.

Other Slide Reserve Options

For courses with small to medium enrollments, faculty may place 35 mm slides on reserve for student review. Slide reserves are viewed at the Visual Resource Collection's individual projection carrels. Textual documentation describing the slides placed on reserve can also be provided to students; this may be a photocopy of the slide labels or documentation submitted by the instructor.
Faculty may also choose to offer image reserves through ARTstor.

For more information about image reserves, or to discuss creating an Image ERes or ARTstor site, please contact Collection staff at slides@ucsc.edu or 459-2791.
