Course Reserve Services
The McHenry and Science & Engineering libraries offer hard-copy and electronic course reserves. The McHenry Library Reserves unit provides reserve services for arts, humanities and social sciences. The Science & Engineering Library Reserves unit provides reserve services for science courses. The goal of both reserve units is to make a limited amount of instructional material available to a large number of borrowers.
Reserve material includes books, journal articles, solutions manuals, exams and lecture notes. Reserve material circulates to UCSC students, faculty, staff, and concurrent enrollment students only. Course reserves are listed in the CRUZCAT online catalog. Patrons will need a current Student I.D. card/library card in order to check out reserve material.
Reserve material circulates for the following amounts of time:
Reserve material must be returned to the Reserve desk from which it was checked out. If you must return reserve material when the libraries are closed, use the appropriate after-hours book drop. Please do not use the drive-up book drop at McHenry library.
Holds may be placed on reserve material up to one day in advance. Holds must be placed in person at the appropriate Reserve desk (McHenry or Science & Engineering) anytime the desks are open. Holds cannot be taken over the phone. Patrons cannot place holds on material while they have it checked out.
Reserve material may be renewed for an additional loan period if there are no holds placed on it. All renewals must take place in person at the Reserve desk where the material was checked out.
Reserves Fine Policy
Reserve fines are $4.00 for the first hour or partial hour and
$1.00 for each hour thereafter
with a $25.00 maximum fine per item. Fines continue to accrue when the
library is closed.
Overdue notices are sent three days after the item is due. Overdue notices are a courtesy; failure to receive a notice is not sufficient reason to reduce or cancel a bill. Reserve material is billed for replacement if seven or more days overdue. Being billed for replacement may result in library privileges being blocked. If it is necessary to bill a borrower for the replacement of reserve material, the charges will include the cost of the material plus the maximum reserve fine, a $6.00 library processing charge and a $10.00 replacement billing charge. When the overdue material is returned, only the replacement cost of the material will be canceled or refunded.
Electronic Reserves
Electronic Reserves, ERes, is available via the World Wide Web. ERes at UCSC is designed to provide electronic access to selected reserve material. It includes discussion boards and chat rooms allowing professors and students to communicate with each other online. Material in ERes can be accessed 24 hours a day from any computer with an Internet connection and either the Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers. We recommend the latest version of either browser. The AOL browser cannot access ERes.
To view documents in ERes it is necessary to have the Acrobat reader plug-in loaded. We recommend the Acrobat Reader v.5. All workstations in the Science & Engineering library, McHenry library, and all campus computing labs have these applications loaded.
Each course in ERes is passworded. Passwords are selected by the instructor of a course and are to be given to students in the class by that instructor. The library is not authorized to give out passwords.
Other Reserves Services
The Film and Music Center and Visual Resource Collection also offer reserve services. Courses may have videos, audio cassettes and images on Reserve. Details of their services are available online. Please contact the appropriate unit..
