Tips for Instructors

Incorporating "Proxied" links to licensed ejournal and database websites into your Web documents

Option 1: Prepend the url of the link with the following text: http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=

Example: http://isiknowledge.com/wos/ is changed to http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://isiknowledge.com/wos/
The html would look like this: <a href="http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://isiknowledge.com/wos/">Web of Science</a>

Option 2: Add a link at the top of the page that reloads the entire page through the OCA proxy server. This will proxify all links on that page. The server will ignore non-library resources.

Example URL: http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=https://webct.ic.ucsc.edu:4443/SCRIPT/Library_Perry/scripts/serve_home
Example HTML: <a href="http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=https://webct.ic.ucsc.edu:4443/SCRIPT/Library_Perry/scripts/serve_home">Reload this page through the library Off-Campus Access Server</a>

The link would look like: OCA logo icon Reload this page through the Library's Off-Campus Access Server

What this does : When a web user clicks on this link, they'll be sent to the library's Off-Campus Access login page. After the user successfully logs in, he'll be sent back the course web page. Now oca.ucsc.edu will be appended to the domain of the course web address and all urls linked on that page. Users will not be asked to log in again to access any licensed library sites like ejournals or databases. Computers on the on-campus network do not need the OCA proxy server and they will simply by-pass the server and go directly to the ejournal sites.
