Beginning Your Research   Go to Top of Page
Taking a few minutes to read about your topic in a specialized encyclopedia, dictionary or handbook may be one of the most effective and time saving research tips in this guide. These can help you define unfamiliar terms, understand the parameters of current debate in a particular area and provide you with preliminary bibliography on the subject. Here are a few items from the Science & Engineering Reference Section.

Interdisciplinary Encyclopedia of Marine Sciences, edited by James W. Nybakken, William W. Broenkow & Tracy L. Vallier

Articles   Go to Top of Page
See also Online Journals

Use the databases below to search for articles via keyword, subject, or author. Links to the electronic version of the article are often available. If the article is only available in print, these databases will give you the library's call number (location) for the journal. [more info]

Flash movie tutorial: UC e-Links film(1:30 min) This is used to link a citation to the location of the article, whether it is online, in print at UCSC, or at another university through interlibrary loan. It is used in the vast majority of our databases, and worthwhile to learn.

For articles on reserve for a class, see ERes (Electronic Reserves). You can connect to online resources from home using Sluglink (the UCSC Library Proxy Server).

Ocean Sciences Databases Comparison Chart - Compares features of UCSC-licensed ocean sciences databases - BIOSIS, Zoological Record, Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts, Web of Science and Oceanic Abstracts databases. [pdf].

BIOSIS Previews [UC Only]
1969-present. This is the big biology database, covering all aspects of biology, including many aspects of ocean science. Its a massive database of scientific (not popular) articles. Comprehensive searches should always include BIOSIS.

Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) [UC Only]
1978-present. The focus here is on all things aquatic, including non-living things. Good for all aquatic topics, including ocean technology policy, aquatic pollution and environmental quality. Can search simultaneously with databases Zoological Record and Oceanic Abstracts.

GeoRef [UC Only]
1785-present North America and 1933-present rest of the world. The most comprehensive database in the geosciences. Includes marine geology, oceanography, and geochemistry. The database includes references to all publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. Masters' theses and doctoral dissertations from US and Canadian universities are also covered.

Zoological Record Plus [UCSC Only]
1978-present. Best place to start for field zoology or taxonomy questions. Half the articles in this database are not in BIOSIS, but BIOSIS is a large database that should also be consulted in addition to Zoological Record for comprehensive searches. Can search simultaneously with databases ASFA and Oceanic Abstracts.

Oceanic Abstracts [UC Only]
1981-present. Focuses on marine biology and physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, non-living resources, meteorology and geology, plus environmental, technological, and legislative topics. Can search simultaneously with databases ASFA and Zoological Record.

Expanded Academic ASAP from Infotrac/Gale [UC Only]
1980-present. Citations to articles from selected scholarly, scientific and general interest journals, and popular magazines in all subject areas. Contains many full text articles. Remember to check UC-eLinks for additional full text.

Web Of Science (Science Citation Index) [UC Only]
1975-present. This is an index to scientific journal articles that also allows you to search for citations to a particular article. You look up the reference to an article that you know about to find more recent journal articles that have cited it. Cited reference searching is a unique way to trace ideas and subjects from past research into the present day. Searchable by author, keyword, and cited reference. Unfortunately this database does not cover conference literature. Because there are a limited number of ports available, please be sure to logoff when you are finished so that your connection can be made available to someone else.
