Getting Started

Where do I begin?

Start by asking yourself some standard questions:

  • Do you need additional supervised training?
  • Do you want to work under a mentor?
  • Do you want to undertake independent research?

If you are unsure of the answers to these questions you can talk to colleagues in your field or at a similar level of career development.

Explore grant resources

You also can learn a great deal by searching the funding-source databases such as those listed in the Grant Funding Sources area of this guide. Each funding source is going to have different dates of submission and criteria.

Find grant opportunities

Start your search for federal government-wide grant opportunities and register to receive automatic e-mail notifications of new grant opportunities as they are posted.

Apply for grants

Now that you have possibly found a grant you want to apply for, find a recent copy of a successful grant proposal that's the same kind you are writing, written for the same agency. You can then use the successful grant proposal as a model for the grant you will be writing.
