BIOSIS Previews [UC Only] New Interface!
1969-present. This is the big life sciences database. It is very interdisciplinary within biology, including biochemistry, ecology, genetics, microbiology, ocean sciences, plant biology and zoology. BIOSIS is a good place to start for topic exploration, or if your topic is plant biology, laboratory studies, or genetics. Comprehensive searches should always include BIOSIS.

PubMed
1966-present. Citations and abstracts covering medicine, biochemistry, biology, bioengineering. Includes links to full text journals from publishers' sites where available.

EIS-Digests of Environmental Impact Statements
1985-current. Detailed abstracts of all environmental impact statements issued by the US government. Each entry includes a description of the project, sections on positive impact and negative consequences, and legal mandates.

Web Of Science (Science Citation Index) [UC Only]
1975-present. This is an index to scientific journal articles that also allows you to search for citations to a particular article. You look up the reference to an article that you know about to find more recent journal articles that have cited it. Cited reference searching is a unique way to trace ideas and subjects from past research into the present day. Searchable by author, keyword, and cited reference. Unfortunately this database does not cover conference literature. Because there are a limited number of ports available, please be sure to logoff when you are finished so that your connection can be made available to someone else. Note: You can now search BIOSIS and Web of Science at the same time. Choose CrossSearch from the pull down menu at the top of theWeb of Science home page.

Toxics Release Inventory (TRI)- Editor's Choice!
Created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this database is a valuable source of information about toxic chemicals released into our air, land, and water by manufacturing companies. It was created as a result of two statutes, Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act (EPCRA) and section 6607 of the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA). TRI is also available as a CD-ROM which you can get from the Protect collection at the Circulation desk at the S&E Library (Disk 225). A step-by-step guide to using the TRI CD-ROM is available.

Digital Dissertations
This database (produced by UMI) includes citations for materials ranging from the first US dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester; those published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Free 24-page PDF previews available since 1996. When available (usually from 1997-present), online versions of complete UC dissertations are free, but a credit card is needed for PDF access to works from other institutions.

EndNote (available for purchase at an academic discount at the UCSC Bay Tree Bookstore) is a database manager that allows you to create your own personal library to store and manage references to documents. National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science
A national clearinghouse for case studies in science, including many in chemistry, environmental sciences, and biology. The use of case studies develops students' skills in group learning, speaking, and critical thinking.

Faculty Guide to Cyber-Plagiarism
A site primarily focused on information for faculty regarding the recognition and prevention of plagiarism. A helpful section on writing tips for students is also available.

TILT (University of Texas, Austin)
This is a great place to start. A fun, interactive library tutorial that will prepare your students to explore and do research in an online world.


The Environmental Toxicology Librarian

Catherine is the Environmental Toxicology Librarian at UCSC. She can help you with:
