For articles on reserve for a class, see ERes (Electronic Reserves). You can connect to online resources from home using Sluglink (the UCSC Library Proxy Server).

ACM Digital Library
Has articles from 1991-present.

CiteSeer (also known as ResearchIndex)
ResearchIndex is a free, full-text index to the freely available research articles on the web. This index is popular with computer scientists because a great deal of the their literature is available this way, and because ResearchIndex also provides citation analysis. Furthermore, while Web of Science (the other citation database) doesn't index conference papers (which are a mainstay in computer science), ResearchIndex does (if the proceedings are on the web for free). It also offers reference linking, extraction of citation context and related document detection. And, similar to Amazon.com, it will show you documents that users who viewed your document also looked at. The icing on the cake is that each record even provides the BibTeX entry for the article for those using that programming language to create their bibliographies.

Engineering Village (EV/Compendex and/or NTIS)
EV platform, 1884-present, is owned by Elsevier Publishing; and Inspec has been available on the EV platform since 2003.

Expanded Academic ASAP from Infotrac/Gale [UC Only]
1980-present. Citations to articles from selected scholarly, scientific and general interest journals, and popular magazines in all subject areas. Good place to start for general multidisciplinary searches or for more popular articles.
Quick Guide to Expanded Academic ASAP [pdf]

IEEE Xplore [UC only]
Full-text access to IEEE and IEE transactions, journals, magazines and conference proceedings published since 1988 and all current IEEE standards.

INSPEC via OVID [UC only]
Covers 1969-present. Provides comprehensive coverage of journal articles and conference papers in computer science electrical engineering, etc. INSPEC includes all the IEEE, IEE and ACM literature as well as many other publishers. Links to full text articles are provided. Links to full text articles are provided. Currently INSPEC indexes 3500 journals, 1500 conferences as well as many books, reports and dissertations. New: "Phrase searching" (adjacency in multiword searches) is now the default. The dollar sign ($) is the new multicharacter truncation symbol. For more information, please see Quick Guide to INSPEC via OVID (from UCB). INSPEC via Ovid (1898-1968) is now available.

MathSciNet [UCSC Only]
1940-present. Search Mathematical Reviews and Current Mathematical Publications. Full text of Mathematical Reviews back from 1940-1979.

Scitopia
Created through the collaboration of 15 leading science and technology societies. It searches the entire electronic libraries of the leading voices in major science and technology disciplines and provides relevant results, without the noise of other Internet search engines. You will get to the content you need quickly without having to search each individual society’s online library. More than three million documents, including peer-reviewed journal content and technical conference papers, spanning 150 years of science and technology can be searched through the site.

Web Of Science (Science Citation Index) [UC Only]
1975-present. This is an index to scientific journal articles that also allows you to search for citations to a particular article. You look up the reference to an article that you know about to find more recent journal articles that have cited it. Cited reference searching is a unique way to trace ideas and subjects from past research into the present day. Searchable by author, keyword, and cited reference. Unfortunately this database does not cover conference literature. Because there are a limited number of ports available, please be sure to logoff when you are finished so that your connection can be made available to someone else.
