Data on organic and inorganic chemicals and drugs. Entries provide structure, patent number, therapeutic use, toxicity, percentage composition and references. Available at the computer near the reference desk at the Science Library.
National Center for
Biotechnology Information (National Library of Medicine)
Protein sequence searching. You can search databases that include
nucleotide sequences, protein sequences, macromolecular structures, and
whole genomes. GenBank, and MEDLINE (through PubMed) are searchable here.
Protein Data Bank
A repository of 3-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules
derived from x-ray crystallography and NMR experiments. To view structures
you need: a Java enabled web browser, a VRML browser, and the RasMol
molecular display program (all are freely available).
Sigma-Aldrich
Search for chemicals and find molecular formula, weight, CAS number,
boiling & melting point, density, structure, prices, MSDS, Beilstein
references, etc.

Envirofacts
Warehouse ( Environmental Protection Agency)
Retrieve environmental information from EPA databases on Air,
Chemicals, Hazardous Waste, Risk Management Plans, Superfund, and Toxic
Releases, among others. Retrieve data and create reports, or you may
generate maps of environmental information by selecting from several
mapping applications available through EPA's Maps On Demand.
Hazardous Chemicals
Database (University of Akron)
This database will allow the user to retrieve information for any of
2662 hazardous chemicals or 'generic' entries based on a keyword search.
Potential keywords include names, formula and registry numbers (CAS, DOT,
RTECS and EPA).
Toxnet - Toxicology Data Network
(National Library of Medicine)
A cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related
areas. Includes both data and references to the chemical literature.

Dissertations
Digital Dissertations
[UC Only]
This database (produced by UMI) includes citations for materials
ranging from the first US dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those
accepted as recently as last semester; those published from 1980 forward
also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for
master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Free 24-page
PDF previews available since 1996. When available (usually from
1997-present), online versions of complete UC dissertations are free, but
a credit card is needed for PDF access to works from other institutions.
WorldCat Dissertations and Theses Database [UC Only]
This database contaions records for over 5 million items cataloged as dissertations, theses, or publisher materials based on theses or dissertations in WorldCat. Click on the Databases tab, uncheck Worldcat, and check WorldCatDissertations. To limit to UCSC, check the box next to Limit availability to items in my library using the Advanced Search.

CHEMCYCLOPEDIA, the Manual of Commercially Available Chemicals

Keeping Current
CDL Update
A "current awareness" service, which allows UC faculty, staff and
students to create and receive automatic weekly updates of searches in the
MELVYL Catalog and most CDL-hosted databases. The results contain records
that have been added to the system in the previous week, so that you
continue to receive new records for the same search(es). It is a
convenient way to stay current with recent journal articles on a
particular topic, the work of a particular author, new books on a topic
being cataloged for the UC collections, or the table of contents of
selected journals.

resources about copyright in general and its importance to higher

EndNote
EndNote (available for purchase at an academic discount at the
UCSC Bay Tree Bookstore) is a
database manager that allows you to create your own personal library to
store and manage references to documents. It works with Word and
WordPerfect, and with other common word processors, to insert citations
into papers and to format bibliographies in any of hundreds of styles.
EndNote can import search results from many bibliographic files, such as
the California Digital Library databases (MELVYL catalog, Medline, Current
Contents, etc.), and Web of Science.

Reference Guide to Using Online Resources
By Andrew Harnack and Eugene Kepplinger, the authors of the book by
the same name. You won't find the entire book here, but several chapters
on specific citation styles are available online, including one from the
Council of Biology Editors (CBE).
