CrossFire Commander [UC Only] - Editor's Choice!
CrossFire is a client/server application for searching the world's largest electronic collections of organic chemistry, inorganic and organometallic data: CrossFire Beilstein and CrossFire Gmelin. The two data files contain millions of compounds and reactions. Use this link to download the CrossFire software for use on the UCSC campus.

Web Of Science (Science Citation Index) [UC Only]
1975-present. Part of the Web of Science, Science Citation Index is an index to scientific journal articles. Searchable by author, keyword, and cited reference. One of the few article indexes to offer searching by phrase, e.g."beta amino acids."

ICSD: Inorganic Crystal Structure Database [UC Only] NEW
The ICSD is a searchable database of more than 93,000 inorganic structures, including pure elements, minerals, metals, and intermetallic compounds. Search by fields such as element(s), citation information (author/journal/title/years), chemical/mineral name, crystal system, space group, minimum distance, cell size/mass, and Pearson Symbol.

CSD: Cambridge Structural Database [UC Only] 2008 version available at circulation desk for checkout, disk 2712
The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) System comprises the database itself, and accompanying software for database creation (PreQuest), search and information retrieval (ConQuest), structure visualisation (Mercury), statistical analysis (VISTA) and the knowledge bases IsoStar and Mogul.

American Chemical Society Publications [UC Only]
Searchable database containing the full text of over 40 journals from the ACS. Coverage varies. Most journal subscriptions begin 1996-2000.

PubMed UC Version [UC Only]

Started in 1994 when Rob Toreki was an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. This reference is meant for students who are starting out in the area of Organometallic Chemistry.

Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry Online
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry is a reference work, international in scope and coverage, encompassing all the disciplines and current practice of industrial chemistry and chemical engineering around the world. National Center for Biotechnology Information (National Library of Medicine)
Protein sequence searching. You can search databases that include nucleotide sequences, protein sequences, macromolecular structures, and whole genomes. GenBank, and MEDLINE (through PubMed) are searchable here.

Protein Data Bank
A repository of 3-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules derived from x-ray crystallography and NMR experiments. To view structures you need: a Java enabled web browser, a VRML browser, and the RasMol molecular display program (all are freely available).

Sigma-Aldrich
Search for chemicals and find molecular formula, weight, CAS number, boiling & melting point, density, structure, prices, MSDS, Beilstein references, etc.

Visual Elements

Guide to dozens of sites offering free Material Safety Data Sheets on the Web, from government agencies and universities to chemical suppliers. Also offers help understanding MSDS information.

Envirofacts Warehouse ( Environmental Protection Agency)
Retrieve environmental information from EPA databases on Air, Chemicals, Hazardous Waste, Risk Management Plans, Superfund, and Toxic Releases, among others. Retrieve data and create reports, or you may generate maps of environmental information by selecting from several mapping applications available through EPA's Maps On Demand.

Hazardous Chemicals Database (University of Akron)
This database will allow the user to retrieve information for any of 2662 hazardous chemicals or 'generic' entries based on a keyword search. Potential keywords include names, formula and registry numbers (CAS, DOT, RTECS and EPA).

Toxnet - Toxicology Data Network (National Library of Medicine)
A cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas. Includes both data and references to the chemical literature.

Dissertations

Digital Dissertations [UC Only]
This database (produced by UMI) includes citations for materials ranging from the first US dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester; those published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Free 24-page PDF previews available since 1996. When available (usually from 1997-present), online versions of complete UC dissertations are free, but a credit card is needed for PDF access to works from other institutions.

WorldCat Dissertations and Theses Database [UC Only]
This database contaions records for over 5 million items cataloged as dissertations, theses, or publisher materials based on theses or dissertations in WorldCat. Click on the Databases tab, uncheck Worldcat, and check WorldCatDissertations. To limit to UCSC, check the box next to Limit availability to items in my library using the Advanced Search.

Gary Wiggins' site at Indiana University covers a broad range of chemistry information that is also keyword searchable. Covers both Internet and printed chemical resources. Excellent site!

Crystallography Online
This Web site is governed by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and provides information about software, databases, suppliers, news, and more all focused in the area of crystallography.

Chemistry index
A supersite of chemical topics from molecular modeling and chemical safety to biographies of chemists. Offers links to conferences, jobs, and a search engine.

Combinatorial Chemistry Internet Guide

CHEMCYCLOPEDIA, the Manual of Commercially Available Chemicals

Thomas Register of American Manufacturers

Keeping Current

CDL Update
A "current awareness" service, which allows UC faculty, staff and students to create and receive automatic weekly updates of searches in the MELVYL Catalog and most CDL-hosted databases. The results contain records that have been added to the system in the previous week, so that you continue to receive new records for the same search(es). It is a convenient way to stay current with recent journal articles on a particular topic, the work of a particular author, new books on a topic being cataloged for the UC collections, or the table of contents of selected journals.

This website provides access to a wide variety of clearly written resources about copyright in general and its importance to higher education, including a variety of other pages dealing with the subject of copyright.

EndNote
EndNote (available for purchase at an academic discount at the UCSC Bay Tree Bookstore) is a database manager that allows you to create your own personal library to store and manage references to documents. It works with Word and WordPerfect, and with other common word processors, to insert citations into papers and to format bibliographies in any of hundreds of styles. EndNote can import search results from many bibliographic files, such as the California Digital Library databases (MELVYL catalog, Medline, Current Contents, etc.), and Web of Science.

Online: A Reference Guide to Using Online Resources
By Andrew Harnack and Eugene Kepplinger, the authors of the book by the same name. You won't find the entire book here, but several chapters on specific citation styles are available online, including one from the Council of Biology Editors (CBE).
