Taking a few minutes to read about your topic in a specialized encyclopedia, dictionary or handbook may be one of the most effective and time saving research tips in this guide. These can help you define unfamiliar terms, understand the parameters of current debate in a particular area and provide you with preliminary bibliography on the subject. The following are located on the reference shelves behind the Science & Engineering Reference Desk area.

Books and Other Materials on Reserve for Classes

Students -- Course reserves are listed in the CRUZCAT online catalog. You can search by course name or instructor to find items on reserve for your class. More information about reserves is also available.

Library of Congress Subject Headings
Both the CRUZCAT and Melvyl Catalog use "Library of Congress Subject Headings" to catalog books. These subject headings are slow to change and sometimes removed from contemporary usage; they are, however, extremely useful in locating books and articles. Examples of subject headings relevant to Nutrition (links to CRUZCAT catalog):

PubMed UC Version [UC Only]
Mid-1960's - present. This searchable database of citations to biomedical literature is a customized University of California edition of the the National Library of Medicine PubMed database. This edition includes more links to full text than the public version, and provides enhanced access to document delivery, among other things.

Academic Search Complete [UC Only]
A searchable database with citations and abstracts for journal articles covering all academic disciplines. Full text is available for more than 50% of the articles in this database. Subject areas: art and art history, general subjects, humanities, science and engineering, social sciences. Good place to start for general multidisciplinary searches or for more popular articles. IBIDS: International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements
This database provides access to article citations and abstracts from published scientific literature on dietary supplements.

Natural Standard [UC Only]
A collaborative database that aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative health therapies, including herbs, supplements, and alternative modalities (accupressure, acupuncture, chiropractic, yoga, etc.). The information provided is evidence- and consensus-based and peer-reviewed. Many of the topics covered include a concise Natural Standard monograph that is based on analysis of scientific literature, historic/folkloric precedent, and expert consultation, and contains information on effectiveness, side effects, interactions, dosing, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The American Dietetic Association
This site provides in-depth and accurate food and nutrition information from a professional association of dietitians. ADA position papers cover topics such as biotechnology and the future of food, food irradiation, integration of medical nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy, and much more. [Access to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association is available for UC students, faculty and staff].

Center for Disease Control and Prevention: Health Topics-Nutrition
Provides access to CDC literature concerning nutrition topics and programs as they relate to disease and disease prevention. Topics include the 5 A Day fruits and vegetable program, micronutrient malnutrition, overweight and obesity, and the pregnancy nutrition surveillance system.

The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network
An informative resource for straight facts on food allergies. Includes FAQs, a newsletter and a section authored by a registered dietitian.

Food and Nutrition Information Center
This site provides access to the vast collection of nutrition-related resources of the National Agricultural Library, a unit of the USDA.

MEDLINEplus: Food, Nutrition and Metabolism Topics
An A-Z topic list that includes eating disorders, metabolic disorders, obesity, vegetarianism, and vitamin supplements.

NUTRITION.GOV
A federal resource providing access to all online federal government information on nutrition. Includes section on food facts, food safety, health management, food assistance programs, and data & statistics.
