Beginning
Your Research
Taking a few minutes to read about your topic in a specialized
encyclopedia, dictionary or handbook may be one of the most effective
and time saving research tips in this guide. These can help you define
unfamiliar terms, understand the parameters of current debate in a particular
area and provide you with preliminary bibliography on the subject. The
following S&E Ref call numbers are located on the reference shelves behind the Science &
Engineering Reference Desk area.

Library of Congress Subject Headings
Both the CRUZCAT and Melvyl Catalog use "Library of Congress Subject
Headings" to catalog books. These subject headings are slow to change
and sometimes removed from contemporary usage; they are, however, extremely
useful in locating books and articles. Examples of subject headings relevant
to Female Physiology (links to CRUZCAT catalog):

Articles

Use these databases to search for articles. Links to the online full text
versions of the articles are often available.
NOTE: If the article is only
available in print, and the database does not provide the library's call
number (location) for the journal, you can search for the journal location
in CRUZCAT. If you already have
the full citation for the article (journal name, date, and page number)
you will only need to find the Web address or call number for the journal
and its location in the library. In this case again, use CRUZCAT
to search for the title of the journal. If the journal is available online,
CRUZCAT will have a link to it.
