The Strands of a Life: The Science of DNA and the Art of Education by Robert L. Sinsheimer

As UCSC Chancellor, Bob Sinsheimer is credited by many for saving UCSC from its original, unsustainable vision and changing it to a world class research university. This memoir not only tells the story of the early days of molecular biology by a major contributor to this new field, but also provides useful insights into how our university is run. It helped me to decipher the organization of UCSC and should be required reading for all new UCSC faculty.
