The Elements of Classical Thermodynamics by A.B. Pippard

Thermodynamics is an example of how one can deduce so much from so little. It also has wide ranging applications: my first course was in mechanical engineering. This book covers the essentials efficiently, and  spends a lot of time discussing the gray areas instead of glossing over them.
