Selected: The
Discoverers: A History of Man's Search to Know His World and Himself
by Daniel J. Boorstin
This
was a gift from my wife at the time when I was writing my dissertation.
I was awestruck by this wonderfully comprehensive history of science,
full of insightful observations and generalizations. This book cast
my own work within the continuum of human efforts to understand
our world. From this book comes also a quote, which I now cite to
my students: "The biggest obstacle in the progress of science
is not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge." Stop thinking
that you already know and new ideas will come.
