This book provided the first systematic look at causes for the extinction of so many large animals around the world over the past 50,000 years, which has made the world a significantly less diverse and less interesting place. The papers in this volume articulate the main alternative hypotheses for the extinction, and point to fruitful ways to test these ideas.
