UC-eLinks Setup Instructions

. What will I be able to do?

Enable EndNote to use the UC-eLinks server to check for availability of items, including full text when available.

. Are there any limitations?
This feature works only with EndNote 7+. Earlier versions do not have this feature.
PC Internet Explorer or Mozilla both work. Does not work with Netscape.
Mac Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Netscape for OSX work.

. Instructions

  1. Open your EndNote program and open the EndNote Preferences.

PC Preferences is the last option on the Edit Menu.
Mac Preferences is on the EndNote Menu.
  2. In the Preferences Interface box (shown below), highlight "OpenURL", and then check the "Enable Open URL" check box. You need to delete the existing OpenURL Path and type in the following: http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://ucelinks.cdlib.org:8888/sfx_local

In the Arguments box, replace "WoS" with "EndNote" so that the argument is exactly as shown in the image below. PC Users may cut and paste the following to replace the entire argument: (do this one line at a time, no spaces may be in this argument)

    ?sid=ISI:EndNote&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&isbn=ISBN&atitle=ATITLE &title=TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE&epage=EPAGE

  3. To use the UC-eLinks, first open a reference in EndNote, then select References...OpenURL Link. (As shown below)

A UC-eLinks window will open with your citation and full text retrieval options.

*Note: Some databases, like OVID BIOSIS insert extra information in the journal name in parenthesis. You can edit this out in your citation view to allow UC-eLinks to locate the full text. For example change Plant Physiology (Rockville, MD) to just Plant Physiology.
