Core Journals

The library has hundreds of journals in music. Browse a list in CRUZCAT with the subject "Music Periodicals" or look through the McHenry stacks; most music journals have call numbers that begin with ML 1. and ML 5.

Find Books

CRUZCAT (http://cruzcat.ucsc.edu) is UCSC's online library catalog. It includes books, periodicals, videos, CDs, and music scores located in both McHenry and the Science & Engineering Library. CRUZCAT does not include the text of journal articles.

The Melvyl Union Catalog (http://melvyl.cdlib.org) contains the holdings of all UC libraries. You may request items UCSC does not own through interlibrary loan.

Here are just a few examples of the many Library of Congress subject headings for music:

Dance Music Vocal Music Music Theory Motion Picture Music
Folk Music Rock Music Musical Form Popular Music
Guitar Rap Music Bach Johann Sebastian 1685 1750 Music -- Philosophy and aesthetics
Sonatas piano Clarinet and piano music Percussion ensembles Songs (High voice)

Find Scores, Pieces, and Recordings

Step 1: Try a KEYWORD search in CRUZCAT. Combine the composer name (if you know it) and some part of the title of the composition (type of piece, opus number, edit or number, key) with the word "and". Examples:
mozart and piano and 9
bach and gottes zeit
schumann and 48

You may click on MODIFY SEARCH to limit your results by material type (recordings, music scores, or video) or to limit by language and date. To limit to CD's, choose the COMPACT DISC limit.

Step 2: Note the location and call number of the item. Use the library call number guide to find the location of your book. Recordings are located in the Film & Music Center on the first floor of McHenry Library. Books with M call numbers of the McHenry Stacks are also located on the first floor.

If your search was not successful, it is still likely that the library has the score or recording you want. Many scores are included in collections of composers' works. Go back to step 1 and broaden the search to find items by the type of work. Examples:
tchaikovsky and concertos
harrison and sonatas
wagner and operas

Note: Some collections of composer works cannot be checked out, but photocopies can be made from them. The library also has a large collection of scores on CD-ROM, housed in the Media and Electronic Resources Center (MERC). They can be viewed and printed from the computers in the MERC. The tables of contents for these CD-ROMs are listed on the publisher's Website. Search for the keyword CD Sheet Music in CRUZCAT for a list of titles. The catalog has links to the tables of contents online.
