Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of the development, nature and variation of humankind, comprising two related—though distinct—disciplines. Physical or biological anthropology is the comparative study of human evolution and of humans' anatomical, biological and physiological functions; cultural or social anthropology observes and documents the nature and social patterns of human cultures and society.

Find Background Information — Reference Materials

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks are excellent resources for gaining an overview of an unfamiliar subject. Entries in these sources explain concepts, terminology, points of view, and offer historical perspective. Annotated bibliographies offer a comprehensive listing of works about the subject, with a short description of each, as a guide for further research. The library holds many more relevant titles than those listed here, so browsing the shelves near these resources can be very helpful.

Companion Encyclopedia of Anthropology
Ref GN25 C65 1994
More a reader than an encyclopedia, this work comprises nearly 40 lengthy articles (with suggested further reading) on humanity, culture and social life, by researchers in anthropology, sociology and archaeology.

History of Physical Anthropology
Ref GN50.3 H57 1997
Two-volume encyclopedia offering a descriptive and analytical history of the discipline from a global perspective, through shorter articles addressing theoretical issues, various sub-disciplines, and major figures in the development of the subject.

Encyclopedia of Human Evolution and Prehistory
Ref GN281 E53 2000
Comprehensive work covering a broad spectrum of sub-disciplines in an attempt to provide the most complete possible context for understanding the human fossil record. Prepared by leading authorities in each subject, yet written to be accessible to those with no prior knowledge.

Illustrated, multi-volume encyclopedia, arranged by country, describing the geographic, ethnic and linguistic background of each of the world's nations and concisely detailing their history, inter-ethnic relations, built environment, social stratification, food and economy, political and domestic lives, religious traditions and more.

Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropology
Ref GN307 E52 1996
Compendium of 340 articles covering all approaches, methods, concepts and topics central to cultural anthropology, as well as archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. Entries trace the development of, and major contributors to, each topic, followed by a list of references.

Encyclopedia of Social and Cultural Anthropology
Ref GN307 E527 1996
Nearly 250 substantial entries on important areas of anthropological work by an international assemblage of anthropolgists. Also includes a section of short biographical entries on leading figures in the development of the discipline, a glossary, and suggestions for further reading.

Encyclopedia of World Cultures
Ref GN307 E53 1991
Multi-volume set, ordered by geographical regions of the world, and containing about 1500 entries with maps, glossaries and indexes of alternate names for the cultural groups described.
