Postgraduate papers—master's theses and doctoral dissertations—completed for degrees at UCSC are accessible in a variety of formats and available in a number of settings.

Finding aids

CRUZCAT
As the catalogue of the UCSC Library, CRUZCAT contains records reflecting the entire collection of materials in all formats (books, periodicals, sound and video recordings, online journals, reference works, and more) at both McHenry and Science & Engineering libraries. UCSC theses and dissertations are included in CRUZCAT, and may be searched by title, author, keyword, or the subject headings masters theses or academic dissertations; most papers may also be searched by department/board of study.

Melvyl
Melvyl—the catalogue of the entire UC system—contains the holdings of all UC-affiliated libraries, including postgraduate papers from all campuses. To find UCSC-specific works, search the subjects masters theses, university of california, santa cruz or academic dissertations, university of california, santa cruz.

Digital Dissertations Available to UC faculty, staff, and students
Also known as Dissertation Abstracts, this database is international in scope, indexing more than two million dissertations and theses from 1861 to the present day. Access is provided to more than 90 percent of the doctoral dissertations accepted in North America, and dissertations published since 1980 (theses since 1988) include abstracts. All titles published since 1997 are available in PDF digital image format and feature 24-page previews; post-1997 University of California titles are available full-text in PDF format. The database is searchable by keyword, subject, title, author, school, and more. (NOTE: Although master's theses are generally included, UCSC master's theses are currently not submitted to Digital Dissertations and consequently will not be found therein.)

In print

While the Special Collections Unit in McHenry Library retains an unbound copy of all UCSC postgraduate papers, those published prior to 2004 are also available in the University Library's open-access shelving ('stacks') in bound, printed volumes (use CRUZCAT to obtain call numbers). Archival prints of papers accepted since 2004 are held in storage at UC's Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF), and are available on-line through Digital Dissertations. Postgraduate papers may also be viewed in Special Collections but, due to copyright restrictions, the Special Collections Unit cannot photocopy these works.

NOTE: The UCSC Library no longer holds undergraduate theses. Please contact the board of study/department (e.g., Art, Environmental Studies, History) for which the thesis was written.
