McHenry Library

Where is the call number?

The Library uses mainly Library of Congress call numbers for books and magazines.

The guide below explains how to read a call number and some help in figuring out which floor and area in the library to search. For additional help using call numbers see "Understanding Call Numbers" <geography.miningco.com/library/congress/blhowto.htm>

How can I find a book at the UCSC libraries?

Search for the book in CRUZCAT, the UCSC Library Catalog, located on our library home page (library.ucsc.edu). You can search by author, title, keyword or subject. The results screen will tell you the location, call number, and whether or not the book is checked out.

How do I find articles?

The Library has a large collection of journal-article databases that allow you to locate articles by subject, author, title and more. Not sure which database to search? Take a look at our "How to Find Articles" online guide (library.ucsc.edu/ref/howto/find_articles.html) where you will find links to databases in subject areas related to your research interests.

Where are the magazines and journals?

If you already have a citation for an article (i.e. journal name, date, page number, etc.) then just look for the name of your journal in CRUZCAT, the UCSC Library Catalog. If we have it, CRUZCAT will let you know if your journal is available online or give you a call number to the print version on our library shelves. Journals are shelved with the books throughout the library. Check the CruzCat Catalog for more information.
