Minimum Browser Recommendations
In order to properly access ERes, the Off-Campus Access service, licensed article databases, catalogs, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and the variety of online journals in the library collection, the Library recommends the following minimum standards for browsers and document readers:
|
Windows Internet Explorer
6.x and above |
Macintosh Firefox 1.5 and above |

Known issues with databases and online journal publishers:
ARTSTOR
The following browsers are recommended for Mac computers: IE 5.2.3, Netscape 7+, and Firefox. On a PC, ARTstor requires Netscape 6.2, IE 5.5, or Firefox. Also note: pop-up blocking must be turned off or pop-ups must be allowed from the site www.artstor.org.
Chinese Journal Network
The site displays Chinese characters and can only be viewed using IE or Netscape 6+. In order to view full-text, users must download a Windows-only application (CAJViewer). Windows stations located in McHenry Library have the CAJViewer application already installed.
CSA Illumina Databases (ASFA, Environmental Sci and Pollution Management, GeoRef, PsycInfo, Sociological Abstracts)
CSA recommends using Netscape v.7.x or newer; or Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer. CSA's interface contains advanced features that are not compatible with the old browsers, and users may get random errors depending on the browser is used.
Expanded Academic ASAP from Infotrac/Gale
From Mac computers, users will see an error message if they click on the pdf icon from the browse results display. This is the results screen that shows immediately after a search. If you click on the article title for a full record display, then click the pdf icon again, the article will load properly in Adobe Reader or Preview.
Inspec (from Ovid)
Effective June 30, 2003, Ovid's minimum browser requirements have been upgraded to Internet Explorer 5.x and above, and Netscape 6.x and above. Some of Ovid's new features also require JavaScript and cookies to be enabled.
Melvyl Catalog
Users that have a Macintosh and that use the Safari, OmniWeb, or Internet Explorer web browsers are able to Request a single item from the full record display and multiple items only from the saved items screen. This method still requires users to sign in with their user ID and password at the top of the Request form.
Mac Users: The Request function (for interlibrary loan) is fully functional only from Netscape, Opera, Firefox or any Mozilla-based web browser. Users that have a Macintosh and that use the Safari, OmniWeb, or Internet Explorer web browsers are able to Request a single item from the full record display and multiple items only from the saved items screen. This method still requires users to sign in with their user ID and password at the top of the Request form. Windows users should not have problems in any browser.
To view special characters, for example, accented Western characters and Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, in Melvyl we recommend the most recent versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape be installed on your computer (IE 5.0 and above and Netscape 6.0 and above). In addition, you must have a font that can display the characters. A free font that displays most of the characters in Melvyl records is Ariel Unicode MS, which is supplied with Office 2000, or can be obtained from the Microsoft site. This font can be used on Windows or Macintosh computers. Some older browsers and older computers can make use of the character displays described here but it may be necessary to download fonts for individual languages one at a time.
PCI Full Text
Internet Explorer for Macintosh does not properly display full text of PCI articles. Please use Netscape or another browser on Mac computers.
Siku Quanshu (SKQS) Wenyuange Edition
This site is accessible only from Windows XP computers running Internet Explorer. All other browsers and platforms will display error messages.
UC-eLinks, Request, and Citation Linker
All of these services use pop-up windows, therefore the browser should be set up to accept all pop-up windows or to accept pop-ups from the following two servers: http://ucelinks.cdlib.org:8888/ and http://request.cdlib.org:8082.
