Additional Tools and Tips for Using OCA
Update bookmarks
If you normally use bookmarks to access databases and ejournals, you'll need to change the links to your licensed resources to invoke the OCA server. Do this by prefixing your URL with the OCA server URL, http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=. So, if you have a link in your page to: http://a.library.licensed.product
You must change it to: http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://a.library.licensed.product
The link to the restricted resource must be absolute (starting http://); it cannot be a relative URL.
Here are some examples of direct links to library databases using OCA:
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://isiknowledge.com/wos for Web of Science
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe for Lexis-Nexis
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://find.galegroup.com/itx/start.do?prodId=EAIM&userGroupName=ucsantacruz for Infotrac Expanded Academic ASAP
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://www.acm.org/dl/Search.html for the ACM Digital Library
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://uclibs.org/PID/17708 for PubMed
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/ for IEEE Xplore
Google Scholar
If you use Google Scholar and you want the UC-eLinks icons to show on the results page, you'll need to run your Google Scholar search through the OCA server. Use the following link to connect to Google Scholar:
http://oca.ucsc.edu/login?url=http://scholar.google.com.
You can bookmark that site or search for it in the library electronic resources database.
Off-Campus Access Bookmarklet
Have you ever gone to a restricted access page only to realize you needed to use the Off-campus Sign-in button first? Use the UCSC OCA Bookmarklet. Instead of going to the library's homepage and logging in, then retracing your steps to return to the page in question, try this bookmarklet and save all of those steps. By clicking on this bookmarklet, you will be redirected through the proxy server for the page you are currently viewing. In some cases you may need to use the browser's "Back" button to return to the resource URL, not the vendor's login/error page.
To download the bookmarklet, click the UCSC OCA Bookmarklet link above and drag it to your browser's tool bar. You can also right-click on the link above and choose "Bookmark this link..." or "Add to Favorites". If you are on a Mac with a one-button mouse, hold down the control button and click the link. When you are on a Web page you'd like to run through the proxy server, simply choose that bookmark from your Favorites or Bookmarks menu. This even works with Google Scholar search results page and works after clicking on emailed Table of Contents Alerts from journals.
DOI Lookup
(IE DOI Lookup: Internet Explorer version)
Digital Object Identifiers are unique IDs for online articles, conference papers, e-books and other online information. If you find a DOI for a document on a Web page you'd like to see, simply highlight the DOI and click this bookmarklet. If you haven't already logged into OCA, you'll be sent to the login page and then to the document. To download the bookmarklet, right-click on the DOI Lookup link above and choose "Bookmark this link..." or "Add to Favorites". If you are on a Mac with a one-button mouse, hold down the control button and click the link. When you are on a Web page you'd like to run through the proxy server, simply choose that bookmark from your Favorites or Bookmarks menu.
Try it with this DOI: 10.1016/S0388-0001(01)00045-6
LibX Firefox Extension
The UCSC LibX Firefox extension adds a right click menu option to your Firefox browser that will load any Webpage or link through the Off-Campus Access proxy server. It adds an option to highlight any text and run it through Google Scholar. The extension also adds an optional extra search bar to your Firefox browser window that allows you to quickly search Google Scholar, Melvyl, or Cruzcat.
