Marcel Sedletzky: Architect and Teacher
Written by cultural journalist Bill Staggs and
introduced by San Francisco Chronicle urban design writer
John King, this intriguing and informative book is based on
archival research and candid interviews with Marcel Sedletzky's
clients and others who have lived in his houses. Sedletzky,
who emigrated from Europe to the U.S. after World War II,
spent his early career working for the architectural firm
of Victor Gruen Associates in Los Angeles. However, he shaped
his architectural philosophy and style in solo practice in
the Carmel/Monterey Bay area beginning in the early 1960's.
During that time, he partnered with some of California's most
adventuresome clients to create distinctive, unique and dramatic
contemporary residences on the Central California Coast.
This handsome volume is profusely illustrated with photographs,
sketches and working drawings from the Marcel Sedletzky Archive
held in the Special Collections of the University Library
at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Its publication
will enhance the reputation of a singular and under-appreciated
architect who contributed dramatically to the architectural
heritage of the Central Coast.
