McHenry Renovation: update, pictures, work next week

The beginning of August finds the renovation work on McHenry Library moving along. As McHenry Addition staff can attest, we're firmly in the demolition phase of the project. The last few months have been marked by a great deal of drilling and concrete removal to excavate and prepare the building for its new seismic retrofits.

Here are a few photos, courtesy of Eric Baker, showing some seismic work taking place around McHenry:

Excavation on the north side between the old temporary loading dock and the Circulation offices in preparation for seismic upgrade work

Pit excavation on the West side of the 1st floor (imagine the oversized books where this almost 30' deep pit now is). Future site of seismic stabilizing column of bathrooms linking all floors.

Bye Bye, Staircase... The circular staircase is demolished to meet new fire codes.

A Really Grand Foyer: the entrance to the old foyer is now completely open to accommodate necessary vehicles and demolition.

Next week's work

Pit excavation continues, excavation of seismic sites around the outside of the library continues, as possible.

Notice: Jackhammering is expected to continue through November as demolition of other staircases and pit excavation continues for seismic upgrades.

McHenry Library Addition Now Open

We're still moving and settling in, but the McHenry Addition is open for business!

The entrance to the building is now on the south side. The old entrance will be closed off for the next 18-24 months while construction crews renovate and seismically retrofit the older part of McHenry. Access and parking information is available on the Maps and directions page. All of the collections, service desks, and staff have moved and we're getting unpacked. A directory of services and floor maps of the addition is available on the McHenry page. Some of the moves are still in process, including the Media Center's film and music collection as well as book call numbers M-PN on the third floor of the addition. These areas will be roped off with caution tape until they're completed later this week. Stay tuned for the announcement of a celebration and house-warming in our new digs!

Library and ITS Instructional Computing on Lab Pilot

The Library and Instructional Computing are partnering together on a pilot project called the Science Library lab. Starting on March 31, 2008, the Cowell Room computer lab at the Science and Engineering Library will be supported and staffed by Instructional Computing.

Current students, staff and faculty with a UCSC login and password will be able to print their documents and have the jobs billed to their UCSC account (or bill), as is the case in other IC labs. Printing jobs using a Copier Services print card is still be an option for the public, as it is in other Library printing locations. The hardware, software and lab policies will be similar to other IC lab locations.

This pilot will run until the end of Fall Quarter, 2008, in order to gather data and analyze what the next steps will be. For more information, visit http://ic.ucsc.edu/scilib and please feel free to give us feedback at ic@ucsc.edu.

McHenry Laptop Checkout

Beginning Winter Quarter 2008, laptops will be available for checkout from McHenry Library. The circulation desk has 10 Apple MacBooks available for students, faculty, and staff to use in the library. More...

S&E Library Spring Break Hours

The SCIENCE & ENGINEERING LIBRARY WILL BE OPEN SPRING BREAK the following hours:

Friday March 21: 8am-8pm (last day of finals)
Saturday March 22: 1pm-5pm (see restricted services below)
Sunday March 23: 1pm-5pm (Easter)
Monday March 24 - Thursday March 27: 8am-8pm
Friday March 28: CLOSED (campus holiday)
Saturday March 29: 1pm-5pm
Sunday March 30: 1pm-5pm

Regular quarter hours resume on Monday March 31.

Saturday, March 22nd: (these services will resume Sunday March 23)
There will be no off-campus access (OCA) to any licensed resources such as journals.
Cruzcat will also be unavailable. Use Melvyl or Online Journals to search our holdings, or, if you are on-campus, to find links to licensed resources.
S&E Library public printing will not be available.

Library Server Outage, Saturday-Sunday

During the McHenry Library move over Spring Break, the library servers and the services hosted on them will be unavailable from 8pm on Friday, March 21 until 5pm on Sunday, March 23. The following services and websites will not be available:

It's getting closer to completion! McHenry Library Closed During Spring Break for Move into the Addition

McHenry will be closed during spring break: In order to carry out the move, McHenry Library will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 21 and will remain closed throughout spring break. Barring a crisis during the move, the library will reopen on Monday, March 31, although some areas of the addition may be temporarily closed off if moves are still underway. Some services may not be fully operational since we will still be getting settled.

New Front Door to McHenry, beginning March 31

After the move, access to McHenry Library will be through a temporary entrance on the southwest side of the addition (the Performing Arts side). The north side (the Bookstore side) of the existing building will be fenced off, so people approaching from the north will be routed around the construction site to the southwest entrance. The road on the south side of McHenry that has been closed for 2 years will reopen, and metered parking will again be available closer to the library.

Limited Availability to Special Collections

Special Collections will have limited availability during the renovation phase. Much of the material housed in Special Collections will be temporarily stored at the UC Northern Regional Library Facility and will not be available for use. A small quantity of higher use materials will be kept on site and will be available. Please plan accordingly.

What about my books while the library is closed?

While McHenry Library is closed over spring break, materials can be returned to the S&E Library. Here are some more details:

* Dates for books checked out of McHenry Library have been extended: For anyone who has McHenry books checked out that were to be due during spring break, the borrowing period has been extended. No books will be due during the break.

* Interlibrary Loan materials (including those that would have been checked out from McHenry) will be available at the Science & Engineering Library circulation desk. ILL materials can also be returned to the Science & Engineering Library.

Below are new interior photos taken by Eric Baker, Library Operations. Interior finishing is moving along quite rapidly. You can see that the lighting is going in, along with the wood ceiling in the "street." The shelving is being installed and pavers are being placed in the south west Reading Porch.
