<summary>New photos of the renovation have been supplied by Eric Baker. I&apos;m attaching several here which document the renovation progress over the last 2.5 weeks.

Excavation outside of building for seismic stabilization:
North side of library near recent loading dock

North side of library between loading dock and foyer doors

Can you guess where this is?

Those of you guessing the view is from the old Tech Services (1st floor) area looking at the freight elevator would be right!

The infamous Pit...

Think back to the pit shown in photos from a few weeks ago. Located on the first floor area where the oversized books used to live and going down, the pit was excavated to core down into bedrock, creating a big seismic stabilization point and forming the basis for the new column of bathrooms to be located on each floor. Excavation was recently completed (down to ~30 ft!).

This week&apos;s photos show the beginning of the rebuilding process. The first step is to pour 7 ft of concrete as the base. Have a look:

Next up for the Pit? Creating concrete forms, setting rebar, and more (much more!) cement...

Work in the coming weeks:
- Jackhammering will continue as the demolition phase winds down. Demolition of the south and east stairs continues, as they move down floor by floor.
- External excavation continues for the seismic pillars </summary>

<summary>Just a few updates on renovation activities:
 * the &quot;pit&quot; excavation shown in the last posting has ended. The construction crews reached bedrock (necessary for seismic stability) at about 30 feet! The new column of bathrooms will grow from this area and continue up to all floors as the renovation moves forward.
* the South and East stairs are being demolished over the next few weeks. This is being done floor by floor. You can expect some vibrations and noise as the staircases are removed (remember, the stairs are all concrete and rebar!).</summary>

<summary>The beginning of August finds the renovation work on McHenry Library moving along. As McHenry Addition staff can attest, we&apos;re firmly in the demolition phase of the project. The last few months have been marked by a great deal of drilling and concrete removal to excavate and prepare the building for its new seismic retrofits.

Here are a few photos, courtesy of Eric Baker, showing some seismic work taking place around McHenry:

Excavation on the north side between the old temporary loading dock and the Circulation offices in preparation for seismic upgrade work

Pit excavation on the West side of the 1st floor (imagine the oversized books where this almost 30&apos; deep pit now is). Future site of seismic stabilizing column of bathrooms linking all floors.

Bye Bye, Staircase... The circular staircase is demolished to meet new fire codes.

A Really Grand Foyer: the entrance to the old foyer is now completely open to accommodate necessary vehicles and demolition.

Next week&apos;s work

Pit excavation continues, excavation of seismic sites around the outside of the library continues, as possible.

Notice: Jackhammering is expected to continue through November as demolition of other staircases and pit excavation continues for seismic upgrades.</summary>

Access and parking information is available on the Maps and directions page. All of the collections, service desks, and staff have moved and we&apos;re getting unpacked. <summary>The Library and Instructional Computing are partnering together on a pilot project called the Science Library lab. Starting on March 31, 2008, the Cowell Room computer lab at the Science and Engineering Library will be supported and staffed by Instructional Computing.

Current students, staff and faculty with a UCSC login and password will be able to print their documents and have the jobs billed to their UCSC account (or bill), as is the case in other IC labs. Printing jobs using a Copier Services print card is still be an option for the public, as it is in other Library printing locations. The hardware, software and lab policies will be similar to other IC lab locations.

This pilot will run until the end of Fall Quarter, 2008, in order to gather data and analyze what the next steps will be. For more information, visit http://ic.ucsc.edu/scilib and please feel free to give us feedback at ic@ucsc.edu. </summary>

<summary>McHenry will be closed during spring break: In order to carry out the move, McHenry Library will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 21 and will remain closed throughout spring break. Barring a crisis during the move, the library will reopen on Monday, March 31, although some areas of the addition may be temporarily closed off if moves are still underway. The north side (the Bookstore side) of the existing building will be fenced off, so people approaching from the north will be routed around the construction site to the southwest entrance.
