McHenry Library Addition and Renovation Blog

Construction within McHenry Library will be happening in three places next week, all taking place along the south wall at the 7 column line. On the first floor, a storm drain pipe will be installed along the wall near the NA call numbers. On the second floor, in room 273A, and on the third floor, between carrels 371B and 373A, windows will be removed and replaced with a wall.

This work is necessary for completion of the addition and in preparation for the renovation. The Preservation Unit is aware of the schedule and is working on solutions for protecting the collection.

Next Monday, August 27th, there will be an abatement on the first floor outside room 167. The following few days there will be pipe work done in the same area to supply heating hot water to the addition. The public computers outside room 167 have been removed, and the adjacent stacks will be covered with plastic. The work area will be isolated by plastic sheeting, so access around the art books, oversize books, and current periodicals will be somewhat limited during next week.

The campus will be shutting down heating hot water to McHenry Library from Wednesday, 8/22 until Monday, 9/3. This will coincide with work that will be done on the first floor, near room 167, to run heating hot water pipes into the addition.

Next week, on Tuesday, August 7th, there will be construction work happening at the southwest corner of McHenry Library as they shotcrete retaining walls for the reading garden planters as part of the landscaping work now in progress. The pumping truck will be located near the ADA ramp at the southwest corner, just outside the Reference and Government Publications offices.

On the same day, work will begin on the new telecom room which will be located in Greg Careaga's former office in the Film & Music Center. The work on the new telecom room will continue through August 31st.

Next Thursday, August 9th, there will be an abatement taking place in Room 463 on the fourth floor. This will be followed by a 3-4 day demolition of the precast concrete panel, in preparation for the fourth floor opening to the addition that will be used during the collection and staff moves.

7/31/07 Constructon update from Eric Baker, Head of Operations:

The jack-hammering being done on the exterior south stairs will be completed today. Tomorrow, between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM they will be pouring concrete for the east exterior stair tower, which should not be noisy or disruptive.
