McHenry Library south-side access is now completely closed; access the library from the north-side entrance only

Beginning today, November 18th, south-side access to McHenry Library (the side where the drive-up book return was located) is completely closed. The gate on the one-lane road, between the library, the Music Center and Performing Arts complex, is closed. A sign at the Music Center re-directs vehicles to park in the Performing Arts lot, or in the Hahn lot. The south library foyer doors have signs (shown in the photo below) saying that it is a construction area with no exit.

Access to the library, from now on, is only from the north side (the side with access to Steinhart Way). To walk to the Performing Arts/Music Center area from the north-side entrance, walk on the driveway at the back of the Chancellor's Office, past the construction trailers, and follow the path up the hill through Baskin Arts to the Performing Arts area. Bicycles should follow Steinhart Way (the road where the shuttles drive) around Kerr Hall to the Performing Arts area to access the meadow bike path.

One-lane road closure on south side of library - New sign in Performing arts parking lot

This week the one-lane access road to McHenry Library's south side will be closed. A sign is now posted at the top of the Performing Arts parking lot next to the Music Center directing vehicles to park in the Hahn Building lot (across the walking bridge on McHenry's north side) or in the Performing Arts lot. There will be no public parking allowed past this sign. Pedestrian access will be re-routed to the north side of McHenry through the Baskin Arts facility (to the left -- if looking towards the library -- of the ARC Center building).

Lower pedestrian/bicycle path between the Hahn Building and McHenry Library temporarily closed

Due to construction of the north side temporary loading dock, which began on November 7th, access to the lower path between the Hahn Building and McHenry Library is now temporarily closed. From McHenry, pedestrians and bicycles may use the bridge to the Hahn Building and Hahn parking lot, or may take Steinhart Way, where the shuttles drive. From the Hahn Building, pedestrian and bike traffic is now re-routed to a path to the left of the closed path that connects to the bridge to McHenry (see photo below). The lower path will reopen once the temporary loading dock construction is finished.

On the left is the route next to the Hahn Building (shown) that leads to the bridge to McHenry, and on the right is the closed lower path.

Construction fencing in place

The construction fencing has been put in place on both sides of the library. Please note that both the south side stairs from the Music Center area and the one-lane drive are still open. The fencing being installed on the north side is to protect the area where the temporary loading dock will be.
