David Kirk Media Center

The David Kirk Media Center supports the study and teaching of film and digital media, acting, languages, music, and other disciplines. Faculty depend on the Media Center's collections and annually borrow thousands of items for classroom use. Students use the 18 specially equipped viewing, listening and study rooms to complete assignments as well as to listen to music and view films just for fun. Thirty video workstations and 22 computers complete the wide range of technology used in the Media Center.

  • The Media Center is located in Room 0350 on the ground floor of the McHenry Library addition.
  • Items in the collection circulate only to UCSC faculty members. Individual workstations and group rooms are available to use while working with the Media Center collection.
  • We maintain media reserves including videotapes, laserdiscs, DVDs, phonographic records, cassette tapes, CDs, and music scores.

Librarian David Kirk, in his former role as director of the Media Center, applied his love for and deep knowledge of film and film studies to help build a broad and deep collection with special strengths in ethnic studies, gender studies, as well as Asian and Latin American films.

His gifts to the University Library in support of film studies, the purchase of films, the Media Center itself, and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgendered Studies have made and will make a long-lasting impact on the lives of members of the UCSC community.

See "A love letter to McHenry" for more information about David Kirk's legacy at the University Library.
