EART 104      GeoRef Help

To find articles in GeoRef, try one of these searches:

DE=multnomah county oregon and DE=geologic hazards

TI=tsunami* and DE=oregon and DE=geologic hazards

(You have to change the pull-down box on the right to DE)
DE stands for Descriptor - it's like a subject heading.

You'll get over 100 results from this search so you may want to narrow it by using another geographic term like the county (e.g. Multnomah) or the name of the 7.5' topographic map that your location is on (e.g. Portland or Linnton).
You'll get more results using a bigger geographic area, such as "Multnomah County Oregon " or "Columbia River", or "Tualatin River basin" rather than "Portland".

For even more results, add another search term using "or":
KW=(portland) and TI=(tectonic or fault*)

To search creek names, try using the "Anywhere" search box.
View the records that result, and look for additional geographic names you could use in a search.
Remember that a creek can run through more than one county!

In the short citation display, there is a section on the right labeled Descriptors.
You can see ALL the descriptors for an article by clicking on "View Record" at the bottom of the citation.
You can look for other descriptors that are narrower and more specific to your topic, then go back and use them in a new search.

Remember to use truncation to retrieve plurals, e.g. fault* to get fault and faults and faulting .

Some handy descriptors are:

earthquakes faults seismic risk seismicity
geologic hazards floods debris flows rivers and streams
streamflow drainage basins hydrology water management

When you get the results of your search, there may be a tab at the bottom right corner of the green area saying "More".
If you click there, you MAY see a tab that says "Maps". These may either be maps, or articles that include significant maps.
You can also change the pull-down menu to "Publication Type" and enter "Map" , e.g.
KW=(portland) and DE=Cascadia and PT=map

GeoRef searches usually retrieve many publications from the USGS, which we have here at UCSC.
Note that only publications from the last several years are typically available online, so we include the call number for paper issues in the book stacks.
