Responsibilities
This position works collaboratively with the science liaison for
Chemistry. The successful candidate will provide research assistance and

Library began in summer 2006, an ambitious set of activities to support
its commitment to integrate cartographic collections and geographic
information systems fully into the University’s programs. New procedures
for reader access and facility monitors have been introduced to improve
security of the collections. Additional staff resources have been
allocated to catalog and preserve maps. An aggressive program of GIS
instruction and reference services has complemented assistance in
accessing and using print maps for teaching, research, and student
learning.
In addition to this leadership curator position, the Maps Collection is
staffed by one GIS specialist, an instruction specialist, one library
service assistant and student assistants; a full time cataloger and
part-time conservator are also dedicated to improving access to the
collections. Grants and special projects fund additional support. The

Provides resource materials from the multi-disciplinary collection to
support the research and work of the Department of Interior, scientists,
universities, libraries, professionals and world-wide governmental
agencies.
Provides professional leadership to the Library team in the
implementation of USGS library policy and procedures which may include
but not limited too, circulation services, reference services,
cataloging services, collection development, collection weeding,
preservation, environmental control, disaster recovery, as well as
acquisitions and technical services.

Western Illinois University Libraries seeks an innovative and user-oriented
Government Information and Data Services Librarian to become part of their
exciting transformation into a digital information commons. The successful
candidate will plan, develop, and deliver government information and spatial
and numeric data services across the university.
QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited master's degree. A sixth-year specialist
degree in librarianship or an advanced / professional degree must be
completed within one year of initial appointment. Experience with using U.S.
government information resources. Experience using GIS or demonstrated
interest in learning GIS (GIS educational opportunities will be available
through WIU's Geography Department classes and commercial vendor workshops).
Reference experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Map library experience. Federal Depository Library
Program experience. Experience evaluating online government information for
inclusion in library Web pages. Experience providing bibliographic
instruction in an academic library. Familiarity with using: SPSS or other
data analysis software applications; international government organization
resources; and legal reference resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Government Information and Data Services Librarian is
responsible for the continued development of the Library GIS/map services.
Working closely with library colleagues, the Government Information and Data
Services Librarian participates in the selection, organization, and delivery
of data collections.
Other responsibilities include:
serves as liaison to academic departments; participates in reference and instruction; works
collaboratively with the Government Documents Librarian to insure access to
government information; participates in government information outreach
activities to the University and surrounding communities; contributes in
departmental and library planning; serves on library-wide and University
committees; and completes research and service activities to achieve tenure
and promotion.
THE DEPARTMENT:WIU Libraries is undergoing a transformation of its services
and facilities with its migration toward digital resources and services. WIU
Libraries employs 16 faculty and 42 civil service staff in the Leslie F.
Malpass Library, 3 on-campus branch libraries and one at the WIU-Quad Cities
campus. The Libraries collection includes over 1,000,000 catalogued volumes,
approximately 2,000 periodical print subscriptions, access to over 25,000
full-text journals, 300,000 maps and substantial government documents,
microforms, and non-book materials. The annual budget is 4.5 million.
