USGS: Postdocs

Subject: PostDoc positions available: USGS Center of Excellence for
Geospatial Information Science
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2006 1
From: Jane Read <JARead@maxwell.syr.edu>

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Center of Excellence for Geospatial
Information Science (CEGIS)
has two post doctoral appointments available
in the Rolla, Missouri office. The appointments must be filled through
the National Research Council (NRC) Research Associateship program. For
application instructions, forms, and process, interested candidates
should access the NRC web site at:

http://www7.nationalacademies.org/rap/Cover_Page_Application_Information_links.html

The specific opportunity is posted at:

http://nrc58.nas.edu/pgasurvey/data/aobooks/rapbooks.asp?mode=rodetail&roid=42147&pcd=906102

The description of the announcement follows. (See extended entry below)

USGS is supporting the development of a number of research projects in
geospatial information science through the Center of Excellence for
Geospatial Information Science (CEGIS). Several Research Associates will
be hired to support the CEGIS mission, which includes a series of broad
goals to address specific questions of relevance to the science mission
of the USGS.

GIScience includes the science behind the traditional mapping
disciplines of surveying, aerial photographic interpretation,
photogrammetry, remote sensing, and cartography. It also encompasses a
broader scope of issues related to the modeling and representation of
geographic data, phenomena, and processes; human cognition of geographic
information; the analysis and use of uncertainty; spatial analysis and
modeling, including geographic information systems (GIS); scale
sensitivities; geographic ontologies; visualization; and other similar
topics.

Specific topics currently being investigated by CEGIS researchers
include (1) information fusion, visualization, and ontology for The
National Map, specifically addressing automated data integration and
generalization; (2) analyzing and developing rapid map projection for
large raster datasets over the Web using parallel and grid computing;
and (3) fractal and variogram methods to analyze scale and resolution
effects on geospatial data.

Associates may propose work complementing the currently ongoing research
or address the broader research goals and questions of GIScience. All
areas of this research opportunity will support theoretical and
technical development. The Associate will be responsible for supporting
the principal investigator with the theoretical development and
supervising the computer implementation of the theory by a team of
programmers and technicians. Associates are expected to develop their
own approaches to both theoretical developments and implementation
strategies to provide breadth to the scientific endeavor. Publication of
results in peer-reviewed journals is considered a part of the
responsibilities of the project team including Associates.

Idaho State: History and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

*History and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).* The Department of
History at Idaho State University invites applications for a new tenure
track, assistant professorship from scholars who have extensive
experience and training in the use of GIS and other tools of spatial
analysis in the study of history. The successful candidate will be one
of the leaders in the development of ISU’s new GIS-based M.A. program in
Historical Resources Management and a new undergraduate curriculum with
a spatial emphasis. This person will teach core courses in the graduate
curriculum, train graduate students in the use of GIS in historical
studies, and develop graduate and undergraduate courses in his or her
area of specialization. The field of specialization is open, though
candidates should not duplicate the teaching and research priorities of
the current faculty. A Ph.D. in history, historical geography, or
related interdisciplinary degree is required by the time of hire in
August 2007. Teaching experience and an interest in developing funded
research are highly desirable.

Idaho State University is a comprehensive
teaching and research institution located in Pocatello, a community of
approximately 60,000 nestled in a scenic mountain valley in southeastern
Idaho. ISU is an AA/EOE and encourages applications from a diverse set
of candidates. Apply with a letter of introduction, c.v., and three
letters of recommendation to: Dr. Allan Christelow, Chair; Department of
History; Idaho State University; 921 S. 8^th Ave., Stop 8079; Pocatello,

Review of applications will begin December 8, 2006. For full
consideration, please apply by this date; the search will continue until
the position is filled.

****
I want to stress that at this time, we do not have a specialist in the
history of cartography, any area of Asian history nor in either Modern
Britain or Modern Europe. For an indication of other possible areas of
specialization, which do not duplicate those of current department
members, I direct attention to a web page I created for interested
students. Go to the section "What is needed to start the program?" at
the URL:
http://www.isu.edu/~owenjack/grad.html

Those who wish to read something about the program may find useful an
article published in *ArcNews* last fall, at the URL:

My colleague Laura Woodworth-Ney and I have also published an article
about the process of creating this graduate program, available at the URL:

Thank you for your attention and for any help in making this
announcement available to worthy candidates.
