Jane Ingalls is WAML's new Archvist

Julie Sweetkind-Singer has stepped down from the role of WAML Archivist, but she has handed over the reins to her colleague Jane Ingalls. I'd like to thank Julie for all of her efforts at organizing the historical files of our 40 year old organization, and I am also pleased to welcome Jane. We're hoping that there will be a seamless transition! Jane tells me that she is looking forward to learning more about Photoshop and Flickr (related to the WAML Photo History).

Speaking of WAML history, I asked Julie about the history of the WAML archives. Julie said that she inherited the job from Phil Hoehn when he left Stanford. As Julie says, "It made it easier as we didn't have to mail the materials to anyone else". Here is Phil's response when Julie asked him more about the background of the archives:

"My understanding is that 'in the beginning' WAML decided the archives should be at the UC Berkeley Map Room. Each successive UCB Map Librarian automatically inherited the job. Sheila Dowd (former UCB Map Librarian) was the first WAML Archivist. Janet Rudd took over when she was appointed UCB Map Librarian. I "inherited" the position in 1980 when I became UCB Map Librarian. Vivien Roumani-Denn, my successor at UCB, decided to break the chain, so when I left UCB in 1997 the archives came with me to Branner."

So please give thanks to Julie and welcome Jane.

WAML President,  07-08
