THE FEDERAL DEPOSITORY LIBRARY PROGRAM

The United States Government Printing Office (GPO) is the world's largest publisher, distributing publications to approximately 1,320 designated federal depository libraries across the country. UCSC was designated as a selective federal depository in 1963. We receive depository shipments on a weekly basis. Free public access is provided to all documents received through the depository program. Some popular titles are:

Statistical Abstract of the United States Congressional Hearings
Census Reports (for all states) Federal Register

Budget of the United States

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
Congressional Record Uniform Crime Reports of the United States

CALIFORNIA AND LOCAL DOCUMENTS

UCSC has been a California Depository library since 1963. We receive a large number of publications produced by California state agencies. We also collect reports from Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. Some popular California titles are:

California State Budget Assembly/Senate Weekly History
California Statistical Abstract Assembly/Senate Hearings
California Legislative Journal Who's Who in the California Legislature

LOCATING GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

Most government publications are listed in CRUZCAT, UCSC's online catalog and can be searched by their titles. They are shelved in separate sections for U.S. Documents, California Documents, and Government Publications Reference Area on the main floor of McHenry Library. Some older materials are also shelved on the upper floors of McHenry Library, and many science-related publications are housed at the Science Library. Some materials are received as microfiche. The CRUZCAT catalog provides call numbers and locations, as well as circulation status.

CIRCULATION OF GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

While many government publications may be checked out at the Circulation Desk in McHenry or Science Library, some are restricted to library use only. Microfiche and microfilm may be copied using a microform reader-printer in the Microforms Room on the main floor at a cost of 25 (quarters only) or 20 cents (with a copy card) per page.

DIRECT BORROWING OF GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

We can borrow additional government publications from a network that includes the University of California, Stanford University, and California State University. Inquire at the Government Publications Reference Desk for this service. Borrowed material must be used in McHenry Library and cannot be checked out.

LAW COLLECTION

The Reference Law collection is located on the main floor of McHenry Library. This collection is large enough to sustain basic research in legal studies. Circulating legal material is located on the 4th Floor. Feel free to ask the Government Publications staff for assistance in using the legal materials.

Included in the collection are:

  • Federal and California statutes and codes
  • Santa Cruz county and municipal codes
  • Federal Register
  • Code of Federal Regulations
  • California Code of Regulations
  • Reports of court opinions from U.S. Federal, U.S. Supreme, California Appellate, and California Supreme courts
  • Index to Legal Periodicals
  • Titles related to legal topics such as capital punishment, legal aspects of environmental issues, family law, and landlord-tenant law.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
