Beyond organizing material that documents the activities of the Band, the Archive has an enormous quantity of items that were contributed by Dead Heads. Fans sent letters, poems, photos, and art work to the Grateful Dead over several decades. Some show great ingenuity and creativity; all are heartfelt. Two constructions lovingly made and sent by Linda from San Raphael in 1983 and 1984 are shown here. Although the iconography suggests definitive seasons, we think they're timelessly festive. Linda: we'd love to know your last name. If you recognize your pieces here please contact us (grateful@ucsc.edu).

"I am incredibly happy that the kind archivists at UC Santa Cruz understand the social value of our priceless archive and its hallowed meaning to our most beloved 'Dead Heads.' Without the care it is now receiving these treasures would be lost. Please join me in preserving the legacy so we can all continue to explore and experience what the "Grateful Dead" means to us.”  - Bill Kreutzmann

Upcoming Benefit Concert for the Grateful Dead Archive

Please join us for a very special evening of great music, company, and friendship as we raise money to help support the Grateful Dead Archive. Our Archivist will be there to answer questions and host a silent auction of selected duplicate materials from the Archive, as well as a raffle for a few very special high-end donations from Archive supporters. The Grateful Dead Archive and UC Santa Cruz is deeply grateful to our friends for performing and hosting this special event, especially Slugs & Roses, Jay Saber of TheWheelCompany, Kuumbwa Center, and the many others who have helped put this on. Come out and relive the magic that created the Dead phenomenon and the Archive that documents it!
