Did you know…
.101

Hours:
That the very best way to keep up with McHenry Library hours and access during the exciting library expansion renovation project (ongoing through 2009) is to call the Library Info Line (831-459-4000) before you make plans to trek up there. Refer also to http://library.ucsc.edu. The new McHenry Wing is open for business starting April 1, 2008.

Cell phone coverage:
That cell phone coverage is not 100% guaranteed from every corner of the library building. Ask the staff at Circulation for tips on “power spots” next to the Library building.

Getting to McHenry:
By car: The best parking for McHenry Library access is in the Hahn Lot (accessed by going up Hagar, past the East Field House and sharp left in behind Student Union/Bay Tree Bookstore).
-- Hahn Parking area the gray areas next to Hahn Student Services on this map. http://maps.ucsc.edu/cmhahnstudentservices.html
(If you have an Apple computer, enjoy a preview of the relationship between Hahn and McHenry)

Without a car: for those keeping a lower carbon footprint: consult  TAPS (transportation) web site for everything you need to know about navigation without driving your own car. http://www2.ucsc.edu/taps/

Food and Drink (i.e. coffee)
There is a self-serve, “real” coffee cart (24/7) and a tiny snack bar during weekday business hours on the first floor-- where you enter the new building.

Parking Permits:
Parking permits can be purchased at different locations depending on the time of day you plan to visit!?

For a visit to McHenry on a week day –before 4:30 p.m., stop at the Parking Kiosk – at the main entrance to the University as shown on this map and purchase a day pass for $8.00.  For location of Parking Kiosk, see:  http://www2.ucsc.edu/taps/pdf/erc_map.pdf

After 4:30 p.m. it is fine to drive directly to the Hahn Lot and purchase a temporary permit (for approx. $2.00) from the large blue vending machine there. Bring cash!

Safety:
That rustle you hear in the bushes walking the 5 minutes between Hahn and the McHenry Library is going to be a student taking a shortcut path or one or more of the abundant deer seen on campus. As always, use common sense. Cell phones are great safety devices.  Be aware where you are so you can report anything that feels uncomfortable.
If you have any concerns about personal security in general while on campus – and the library is open late - please consult the  University Emergency Response pages. http://emergency.ucsc.edu/

Handicap access:
There are a two handicapped parking spaces right in front of the entrance to the addition. These can be reached via the Performing Arts area. Once you are nearing the Performing Arts Parking lot, follow signage to McHenry Library. Make a left at the University House drive way and continue on the small road until you reach a traffic light. Continue when it blinks. Keep going until you reach the parking area at the bottom of McHenry Library. Continue uphill towards the building. There are a couple more handicapped parking spaces in the lower parking lot as well, in case the other two are taken.

Annual Book Collection Contest

More than a hundred essays were submitted to the 2007 Book Collection Essay Contest! Click here for a list of the winners, photos, and complete program of the April 27 Awards Ceremony.

Due to some restructuring needs the Friends of the UCSC Library Board has decided to take a hiatus from the annual Book Collection Contest in 2008. We will keep you posted on further developments.
