Roses of Yesterday and Today
University of California, Santa Cruz
This exhibit at McHenry Library featured rose books donated by Patricia Stemler Wiley, recently retired owner of Roses of Yesterday and Today (RYT), the internationally famous Watsonville rose nursery. A portion of the exhibit illustrating the rose in garden history was displayed in the Science Library. The displays included a complete set of rose catalogs from four decades of RYT, and photographs, paintings and literary works inspired by roses. A public reception was held on January 30 at 4 p.m., when Ms. Wiley visited the McHenry Library and gave a short talk on her career and her collection. This exhibit shows off the magnificent gift of well over 100 rose books, donated by Patricia Stemler Wiley. In recognition of her leadership among rose growers, Ms. Wiley was asked to write the Foreword to the Ultimate Rose Book (1993), the "ultimate" recognition of her work as gardener, photographer, writer and book lover. The current exhibit reflects each of these talents, especially the last. Future lovers and scholars of the rose and its books will be grateful for her own bibliophilia and generosity.
