Fall 1995

Nature Writing: An Exploration of a Genre, McHenry and Science Libraries took place from September 18-December 18, 1995 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Nature writing synthesizes scientific information and artistic/literary expression, producing some of the most evocative and essential writing of the late twentieth century. But what is nature writing? Does it include fiction and poetry? What are the historical and cultural roots of this genre, and whose voices have been included or excluded? This exhibit featured writing by Barry Lopez, Terry Tempest Williams, Gary Nabhan, Rachel Carson, Gretel Ehrlich, John McPhee, Linda Hogan, Leslie Marmon Silko, Garrett Hongo, and other writers of natural history literature.
