This exhibit explored the field of oral history, and featured the work of
oral history projects locally, nationally, and internationally, including UCSC's own
Regional History Project at McHenry Library. It also highlighted books in the
Library's collection which draw upon oral history as a rich historical source. Also
included were an World Wide Web station with links to oral history projects on
the Internet, and the display of the first oral history published on CD-Rom.
Chicano art grew out of a period of tremendous political turmoil and the
blossoming of social consciousness among young and old in the Chicano
community. The Chicano Movement during the late 1960s drew together a
body of work that protested the political and social inequalities of the
Mexican American communities in the United States but primarily in the
Southwest. During this period, Chicano culture became assertively visible,
establishing a place in various artistic forms--for example, music, theater,
writing, and art. More than 30 years later, Chicana and Chicano artists
continue to draw upon the political and social issues that affect the Chicano
communities and their realities to inspire their cultural production. While
Chicano scholars differ in their opinion about the state of the Chicano
Movement; most would agree that the passion of its activists perseveres in
the art of contemporary and now "classical" Chicana/o artists. Featured in
this exhibit are many examples of posters designed and printed by
individuals and artist collectives showing the political and social struggle of
Chicano community. Included are examples of work by Yolanda Lopez,
visiting lecturer Spring Quarter in Art Studio. A selection of related books
and art exhibition catalogues complements the graphic material.

Santa Cruz is fortunate in being a rich musical community with a tradition of diverse performances and creative practices. Many persons affiliated with the campus contributed to this tradition. This exhibit included examples of publications, recordings, and other artistic creations that reflect strong musical engagement and activity by UCSC instructors in the Music Department and other disciplines. Selections from special archival Library holdings were also featured.
This exhibit was coordinated with the exhibition tour of "A More Perfect Union: Japanese Americans and the U.S. Constitution" organized by the American Library Association and the Smithsonian Institution which was displayed at the downtown public library. McHenry Library's exhibit documents the history of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, with a particular focus on California. It included art and photography created in the internment camps, the internment experience as reflected in Japanese- American literature and poetry, and the experience of Pajaro Valley's Japanese-American community documented through newspaper clippings of the time. Special highlights were the scholarly and artistic contributions of faculty and community members in Santa Cruz, including Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Kathy Foley, Alice Yang- Murray, and Nobuho Nagasawa. A reception for the exhibit was held on October 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the foyer of McHenry Library.
