McHenry Ground Floor

Provides equipment and space for viewing, listening, and interacting with the University Library's non-print collection. The collection consists of videotapes, DVDs, laserdiscs, 16mm films, compact discs, LP records, and cassette tapes selected to meet specific teaching and research needs.

The Media Center also serves students learning foreign languages through the use of audiocassettes, videos, CD ROMs, and the Web.

Library materials may not always be immediately available, even if they do not appear to be currently checked out. Items may be in storage, undergoing repair, or on hold for a library user. Status codes give information about availability of library materials in circumstances like these.

Ask at Media

Media items in NRLF (Northern Regional Library Facility) storage may be recalled for use by using this online form. (It is not always necessary to "ask at Media".) Media items must be used in the Media Center. Learn more about recalling items from NRLF.

Certain Special Collections materials in NRLF storage may be recalled for use by library patrons. Special Collections staff only may perform this service. See Special Collections staff for details.

In Process

“In Process” items are new library acquisitions that have not yet been processed for circulation. To obtain access to these items, see Circulation Desk staff to arrange for a “TIP" (title in process) Request. This service is available only Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In Transit

When a book or other item from one UCSC library location is returned by a user to the other UCSC library location, there is a short period in which the item will display the status code "in transit" in Cruzcat. A typical example of an item in transit is an S&E item returned to McHenry. In the time it takes for the item to travel from McHenry back to its home at S&E it will display "in transit". This status code will be corrected upon its arrival at S&E.

Library Materials with this status may not be checked out for use. These materials may include Reference books located in the general collection.

Lost

"Lost" status indicates an item which has been through the entire search process, and is now a candidate for replacement. To obtain a needed UCSC library item displaying "Lost" status, please use Interlibrary Loan services. Learn more about Interlibrary Loan.

Missing

"Missing" status indicates a recently-requested search newly under way. Ask Circulation staff for further information on the search process. These items may be requested through Interlibrary Loan by UCSC faculty, staff, and undergraduates.

On Holdshelf

Items on Hold are kept at the Circulation Desk Hold shelves for 7 days, at which point they are either returned to the library shelves or are circulated to the next library user requesting a hold.

On Search

"On Search" items are undergoing the search process and have been through one entire search cycle. Ask Circulation staff for further information on the search process. These items may be requested through Interlibrary Loan by UCSC faculty, staff, and undergraduates.
