Getting Help

The Purdue online writing lab (OWL) is maintained by the English Department, at Purdue University. It provides free access to a wealth of resources suitable for students needing advice on writing skills. These include clearly written handouts and online exercises on general academic writing, writing thesis statements, citation and referencing styles and avoiding plagiarism.

Getting Started: Background Information

Encyclopedias, handbooks, bibliographies and yearbooks provide valuable background information. You can use these resources to explore methods, discipline-specific vocabulary, or timelines.

Europa World Plus is the online version of The Europa World Year Book and Europa Publications' nine-volume Regional Surveys of the World series, which are indispensable sources of information on world-wide affairs.  You canlimit your seaches to the South America, Central America and the Caribbean section.

Gale Virtual Reference Library - Search across a dozens of encyclopedias and reference works covering a wide range of subjects.  Use "Advanced Search" to limit to titles within a "Subject Area" OR select just one source for your search.

Find Your Sources: Indexing & Abstracting Databases

A&I databases provide structured searching for some source material but are directed primarily to academic production, the secondary literature. Secondary sources will help you to interpret, assign value to, conjecture upon, and draw conclusions about the events reported in primary sources. These are usually in the form of published works such as journal articles or books, but may include documentaries, agency reports or working papers. You should also use the articles found via the databases to identify referenced source material you may have missed in source searches.  All of these databases provide UC-eLinks.

PAIS International
The Public Affairs Iinformation Services International database contains citations to journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more.

Other databases at this CSA Illumina site include Worldwide Political Science Abstracts (WPSA), EconLit, Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management (EIS), and Sociological Abstracts. You can opt to search across all of the CSA databases, all databases within a discipline or selected databases. From any CSA database, use the Change option to select cross-search options.1117

Other databases at this EBSCOHost site include Historical Abstracts, GreenFILE, Business Source Complete, and Newspaper Source. You can opt to search across all of the Ebsco databases or selected databases. From any EBSCOhost database, click on the Choose Database link next to the database name.1118 Full-text, Citation, and Multi-journal sites. These resources allow you to search for words within the full-text of articles or citations but do not provide index terms nor directed field searching. It is therefore easy to get lost in too many irrelevant results. Use with caution after you have developed appropriate search terms in searching the Catalog and A&I databases.

JSTOR. Full-text academic journals from Volume1:1 (current 2-5 years embargoed). You can improve your chances of locating appropriate references by searching within a subject collection: Political Science (148 titles) or Latin American Studies (53 titles).

REDLYC (Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe) Free access to an online collection of over 750 Spanish language ejournals maintained by the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México.

SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online SciELO is an electronic virtual library covering over 850 Latin American open access journals.

Sage Online cross-search full-text journals by broad subject (e.g., Economic & Development, Gender Studies,  Politics & International Relations) or specific journals.

Wiley Online access and cross-search full-text journals by broad subject or specific title.

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Note: UC e-Link compatible.

Research Portals

A portal presents information from diverse sources and for a variety of formats through a single search.  Look for breakouts for journal articles, news sources and primary documents.

A rich collection of primary source documents about Latin America and the Caribbean; academic journals and news feeds covering the region; reference articles and commentary; maps and statistics; audio and video; and more.
The site provides peer-reviewed state-of-the-field surveys of current research which discuss the major topics, issues, viewpoints, and controversies within each area of the discipline. Reference-linked bibliographies and teaching guides are included.
Proquest Congressional contains bill tracking services, congressional publications, congressional committee reports and testimony, and political news. Congressional hearings contain the full text of testimony to Congress from public figures, community organizers and experts on a broad variety of topics. Select "Congressional Publications" > "Advanced Search" > "Hearings (1824-present)".
GREENR (Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources) is an online resource that offers authoritative content on the development of emerging green technologies and discusses issues on the environment, sustainability and more.

Regional Organizations and Policy Centers

Look to regional research groups for statistical information, policy briefs, annual reports and primary source materials.

The Political Database of the Americas (PDBA) offers centralized and systematized information about institutions and political processes, national constitutions, branches of government, elections, political constitutional studies and other subjects related to the strengthening of democracy in the region.

The Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) specializes in the development, implementation, and analysis of public opinion surveys.

La Comisión Económica para América Latina (CEPAL) se fundó para contribuir al desarrollo económico de América Latina, coordinar las acciones encaminadas a su promoción y reforzar las relaciones económicas de los países entre sí y con las demás naciones del mundo.= The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) was founded to co-ordinate policies for the promotion of economic development in the Latin American region.

Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA), a nonprofit, tax-exempt independent research and information organization, was established to promote the common interests of the hemisphere, raise the visibility of regional affairs and increase the importance of the inter-American relationship, as well as encourage the formulation of rational and constructive U.S. policies towards Latin America

The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB)  is the largest source of development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean, with a strong commitment to achieve measurable results, increased integrity, transparency and accountability.

Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) grassroots organization dedicated to supporting the Salvadoran people's struggle for self-determination and social and economic justice.

The Salvadoran Humanitarian Aid, Research and Education Foundation (SHARE) works to strengthen solidarity with and among the Salvadoran people in El Salvador and the United States in the struggle for economic sustainability, justice, and human and civil rights.

CARECEN SF and CARECEN LA  provide vital direct services and advocacy to help create a vibrant and thriving Latino immigrant community in San Francisco, the Bay Area and Los Angeles region.

Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) - el sitio oficial del FMLN, primera fuerza política de El Salvador.

The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) promotes human rights, democracy, and social justice by working with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to shape policies in the United States and abroad.

The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) serves as a policy and research resource for visionary social justice movements.

The Center for International Policy (CIP) is a nonprofit research and advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. Through advocacy and policy research, CIP promotes transparency and accountability in U.S. foreign policy, while advocating a foreign policy that promotes international cooperation, demilitarization and respect for human rights.

The Latin America Working Group (LAWG) leads one of the nation's longest-standing coalitions dedicated to foreign policy. LAWG and its sister organization, the Latin America Working Group Education Fund, work with over 60 major religious, humanitarian, grassroots and policy organizations to directly influence decision makers in Washington DC.

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher.  CRF publications include Foreign Affairs, policy briefs (CSRs), and Task Force Reports.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is a U.S. Government agency implementing important foreign assistance programs throughout the region. The Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) oversees 16 bilateral missions, 4 regional programs, and Washington-based programs for Cuba.

The World Bank is comprised of two institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses exclusively on the world’s poorest countries.  See: The World Bank: Latin America & Caribbean.

The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together all 35 independent states of the Americas and constitutes the main political, juridical, and social governmental forum in the Hemisphere.

The Latin American Network Information Center (LANIC) seeks is to facilitate access to Internet-based information to, from, or on Latin America.  Browse resources by country, subject, or projects.  See also: Central American Regional Resources and Latin American Regional Resources.

Access World News offers full-text access to local, state, and regional and international newspapers. Start dates vary, ~1997+.

Proquest Newspapers (Current) Los Angeles Times, New York Times (includes book review and magazine sections), and the Wall Street Journal complete full-text in PDF.  See also: Historical Newspapers (Proquest) indexes articles and provides full-text from Chicago Defender (1905-1975), Chicago Tribune (1849-1987), Los Angeles Times (1881-1987), New York Times (1851-2007), San Francisco Chronicle (1865-1922), Wall Street Journal (1889-1993), and Washington Post (1877-1994).
