The UCSC University Library has built a collection of award winning
children's literature to support the needs of students in the education
program. In recognition of the important role that children's
literature plays in shaping children's visions of themselves and the
world, we hope to create a model collection of children's literature
which represents and depicts the ethnic, cultural and social diversity
of the United States. The collection serves as a sample of the
outstanding juvenile books by and about parallel cultures. The
collection is of interest to educators as well as students and faculty
in literature, creative writing, ethnic studies, psychology and art.
The collection focuses on multicultural literature for grades k-8,
although some selections are suitable for toddlers and young adults.
Fiction, poetry, music, folk literature, history and picture are
included.
The Multicultural and Other Award Winning Children's Literature Collection is an open stack, browsable, permanent reserve collection which is shelved on the first floor of the McHenry Library. Reserve books circulate to UCSC students, faculty and staff only; others may use the collection for reference and review in the library. The loan period for books in the collection is two weeks and books must be checked out and returned through the Reserve Desk located on the first floor.
This bibliography represents titles added to the UCSC Library as
of December 2001. The call number for each title follows the
citation. All
titles in the collection are included in the Cruzcat and Melvyl© Catalogs.
