FMST 194 Chicana/Latina Cultural Production fall 2007

Getting Started

Off Campus Access - To access the library research databases referenced on this guide from off campus, you will need to login to OCA. Click here for information regarding the service.

Make use of the library's How To Guides - particularly useful for this assignment are:

Organize your research results

Keep track of your successful keyword searches and subject headings and make note of the names of authors/scholars that come up related to your topic. The latter strategy will help decrease the number of duplicative searches you run.

The library has a sample research organization sheet available on-line.

Background Information

Before you begin the research process, break your research question into its component parts. Many of the research topics in Feminist Studies cut across the disciplines. Ask yourself who might be concerned with your topic and look for encyclopedias that outline the discipline's perspective. Make special note of the terminology used to describe your topic in the different disciplines. Use those terms when searching in the different databases.

The list below represents a sample of options, use Cruzcat to find more.

Encyclopedia of Feminist Literary Theory McHenry Reference PN98.W64 E53 1997
Encyclopedia of Contemporary & Latin American Cultures McHenry Reference F1406 E515 2000 v.1-3
Gale Virtual Reference on-line database

Cruzcat Find Books and Journals

Just as in the databases, Cruzcat may not use the terminology you use to describe your topic. Instead of femicide, try homicide, for example. Generate a list of synonyms for your terms, then try them as keywords in Cruzcat. Take note of the subject headings and link from them.
