Econ/Lgst 183: Women in the Economy Library Resource Guide
Background Information || Find Books || Recommended Databases || Statistics || Citation Guides || Citation Tools
Off Campus Access - To access the library research databases referenced on this guide from off campus, you will need to login to OCA. Click here for information regarding the service.
Browse policy institution websites, government agency websites and locate their publications, policy briefs, working papers. Look for your topic. Collect keywords, terms, author names and make note of references to studies. Browse the bibliographies of reports/working papers and look for titles you may want to try and find in cruzcat and/or the library databases. Use the reports and briefs you find to help build your search terms for the database searches you will conduct.
***Web Search Caveat***: always verify the accuracy of information you find online. Use the library's How to Evaluate Information on the Web to help assess a site you may want to reference. Wikipedia is not a source I would cite for a paper but I may use it for keyword searching in the library-licensed databases.
Cruzcat Searches
Use Crucat to find books, names of journals, and encyclopedias. The following subject headings will be useful for this assignment. This list is not exhaustive.
if you are working off campus, login to OCA before using the databases below.
NOTE: there are no direct links to full text or cruzcat/melvyl searches in Econlit; open two browsers to search for articles and check source citations in Cruzcat/Melvyl.
NOTE: Use UC-eLinks to locate items owned by UCSC.
NOTE: Use UC-eLinks to locate items owned by UCSC.
Many of the articles you find will include data and discussions of the data. If you need additional data, or, want to look deeper into the statistics used in the journal articles you find, the library has a very thorough research guide to help determine how to find statistics.
Government-focused Search Engines:
OR
Both search engines will search government, .gov, websites only. Useful for focusing and narrowing your web search, tracking down statistics identified in your readings or research.
Government Resources of Special Note:
NOTE:
The library has physical copies of the APA and Chicago Manual of Style citation guides at the Reference Desks.
There is an on-line How To guide for APA, as well.
Copies of the Chicago Manual of Style are located in the McHenry and S&E Libraries behind the Reference Desk, call number: Z253 .C57 2003
Citation Tools (Works Cited/Bibliography)
NOTE: Always verify the format of the citation with your style guide/manual. Sometimes exported citations can drop portions of a citation - double check. It is still significantly less time-consuming to verify the accuracy of a format than it is to manually format all of your citations.
