Senior Theses: Community Studies, Environmental Studies, Biology, Sociology http://libweb.ucsc.edu/thesis/Search.html
UC Santa Cruz Master's Theses & Doctoral Dissertations http://libweb.ucsc.edu/dissertations/
Annotations to Selected Theses & Dissertations:
Alper, Dean (1978, ENVS) “Appropriate Technology: An alternative development strategy.”
Well organized, bibliography. Has an introduction to AT worth looking at. Discusses development, Nepal, and the third world.
Ayala, Carlos Cuauhtemoc (1985, ENVS) “Alcohol from apple pomace.”
Worked with Raymond Dasmann and LE Clemens. In conclusions he states that it takes more energy to produce the alcohol than is found in the alcohol.
Baruchin, Celia (1989, ENVS) “Sunsible Living: energy in America.”
Cites Hal Levin (Solar architect in Santa Cruz). Richard Dorf The Energy Factbook. Nothing too special.
Beaman, Amber (1996, CMMU) “Rainforest Agro-Ecology: the ancient Maya in modern Belize.”
Stratton Sustainability Project, Cayo District, Belize. “Maya Forest Garden” in El Pilar?
Berg, Stephanie (1984, ENVS) “History overview of school outreach in energy education.”
Discusses the 1979 Energy Center in Santa Cruz as well as project SERVE (Soft energy resources of value to education). Not well organized. Has a bit of information for K-12 packets.
Berkey, Jon (1984, ENVS) “Research on solar food dryers at the UCSC farm.”
Sponsored by Steve Gliessman. Thorough. Acknowledgements provide a good look at some people who could offer us support. (University of California Program in Appropriate Technology [UCAT], Brian Williams at the Santa Cruz Energy Center, etc.) Literature review, nutrition of dried foods, design. Decent resource for solar foods day. May be in AT Sourcebook(?).
Blackburn, Kate (1984, ENVS) “The design and implementation of a residential energy conservation program at UCSC.”
No table of contents. Almost good for local conservation issues, but mainly as a reference for people wanting to dig in deeper (not to good for my uses).
Carlson, Karen Marie (1981, ENVS) “Small Enough to Care, Big Enough to Matter.”
Chapter One has a decent overview of AT, as does the beginning of chapter two. Mainly focused on the case of agribusiness. Bucky quote, ecology quote from Barry Commoner. Quotes Darrow and Pam “Social Benefits of Appropriate Technology.” Field study with New Mid-County Food Co-op (in Santa Cruz County). Decent resource for the beginning of the class.
Lipovsky, Molly (1997, ENVS) “Whispers from the plant world: A written component to the Costanoan/Ohlone ethnobotanical interpretive exhibit at Indian Canyon.”
A great project! Got to go there to see what she actually created. Describes many useful species (oaks, common tule, elderberry, willows, soaproot, dogbane, stinging nettle, and sedges). In addition, cordage, hand fire making, acorn processing, games and musical instruments of the Ohlone are discussed.
Stack, Kimberly Michele (2000, CMMU) “The fight for “Terra:” agrarian reform and medicinal plants in rural Brazil.”
Suarez, Angela Brener (1995, ENVS) “Medicinal uses of tropical plants: An ethnobotanical study of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize.”
Two hour slide show (3 carousels with synchronized audio tapes) at Social Science media lab. Atlas of Medicinal Plants of Middle America, Flora of Guatemala. 5 month field study at Centro de Investigaciones de Quintana Roo.
374 Woodland Ave.
Ben Lomond, CA 95005
Hackney, Patrick (1989, ENVS) “Sunsible living, energy alternatives for today: An inquiry into designed communities.”
Describes Village Homes in Davis, and solar design.
Harris, Abbey R. (1986, ECON) “Ecological sustainability and the viability of regional economic self-reliance.”
Concise. Beginning of chapter two talks about the rise of monopoly capitalism. Ch 3 has a part on the myth of the standard of living.
Hoff, Rebecca (1980, ENVS) “Mariculture as an appropriate technology development strategy.”
Possibilities for small scale aquaculture.
Houts, Mary D. (1966) “Vegetation of the UC Santa Cruz Campus.”
Hard to dig into but I’m sure it’s chalked full on information that could be used to make species lists for UCSC trails.
Mealey, Timothy J. (1981, ENVS) “The role of the university in appropriate technology development.”
Discusses a conference with the same title in June 1981 at UCSC. There were over 200 attendees and 20 speakers. OAT California office of appropriate technology. Discusses policies that UCAT should adopt. RAIN magazine. Has great synthesis of knowledge throughout and would provide a great resource for planning another conference of a similar nature at UCSC. Conference program at the end. Murray Bookchin, William Friedland, Hal Levin, Isao Fujimoto [UC Davis], David Morris and/or Harriet Barlow, William Oswald and Kara Nelson [UC Berkeley].
Moss, Daniel (1983, CMMU and ENVS) “Energy Future in Santa Cruz: a case study in the relationship between technological and social change in the appropriate technology movement.”
Integration of technology in the social change process. Author asserts that unless we claim the means of production nothing else will matter. Copy available for SCCAT website?
Murray, Joanne (1984, ENVS and CMMU) “Back to the drawing board: an anaysis of the relationship between energy use patterns and social change.”
Looks into energy self-sufficiency of mobile homes in Santa Cruz. Does it discuss the UCSC Trailer Park?
Swain, Matthew (1996, ENVS) “Piercing the Veil: A Student Activist’s Guide to UCSC’s Bureaucracy and its System of Governance”
White, Kirkland (ENVS) “Biogas for the urban home.”
No table of contents. Built a small scale digester in CA.
